The Swiss procure.ch PMI dropped to a seasonally adjusted 46.3 in September 2025, down from 49.0 in August and below market expectations of 48.0.
The figure signaled the sharpest contraction in the manufacturing sector since May, as rising protectionist measures—particularly from the United States—continued to weigh on the industry.
The share of companies reporting an impact from such measures climbed to a record 47%.
Across components, declines were broad-based: production fell 6.1 points to 49.4, new orders dropped 4.7 points to 40.5, purchasing volume edged down 0.1 point to 41.8, stocks of purchases decreased 0.5 points to 45.2, sales inventories slid 5.6 points to 44.3, and employment weakened 2.2 points to 44.2.
