Sri Lanka Tourist Arrivals Fall Again in August

The number of foreign tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka fell by 3.3% year-on-year to 191,704 in August 2026, following a 1.7% decrease in the previous month.

This marked the fifth year-on-year monthly decline so far this year, although the cumulative tourist arrivals for the first eight months of 2026 successfully crossed the 1.5 million milestone, reaching 1,535,122.

India continued to dominate as the top source market, accounting for 25.0% of arrivals with 47,253 visitors, followed by the UK with 19,588 (10.0%).

China rose to third with 12,321 arrivals (6.0%), overtaking Germany, which slipped to fourth with 11,405 (6.0%).

France rounded out the top five with 10,885 visitors (6.0%).

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka cut its 2026 tourist arrival target to 2.7 million from 3 million and lowered its tourism revenue goal to $4.2 billion from $5 billion amid weakening visitor numbers.

The country also lost hosting rights for the February 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy, which was expected to boost tourism.

The number of foreign tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka fell by 1.7% year-on-year to 196,845 in July 2026, following a 9.9% decline in the previous month. This marked the fourth year-on-year monthly decline this year, although arrivals improved from June’s 124,551. India remained the largest source market with 44,547 visitors, accounting for 23% of total arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom (21,834), the Netherlands (12,493), China (12,336), France (10,102 ), and Australia (9,702). Sri Lanka has set an ambitious target of 3 million tourist arrivals for 2026 after falling short of its goal last year. However, tourist arrivals totaled 1,343,418 in the first seven months of 2026, down 1.8% from the same period a year earlier, reflecting weaker arrivals in recent months amid disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.

Sri Lanka Tourist Arrivals Lowest Since 2024
The number of foreign tourists arrivals in Sri Lanka fell by 9.9% year-on-year to 124,551 in June 2026 after a 9.6% increase in the previous month. This marked the lowest monthly number of arrivals since September 2024 and the third decrease this year. Still, the figures indicate sustained travel interest, with regional markets particularly India, playing a key role in supporting Sri Lanka’s tourism sector. India contributed 43,423 visitors, accounting for 35% of total arrivals and reinforcing its position as the leading driver of inbound tourism to the island. This was followed by the UK (8%), Australia (7%), China (7%), and the US (3%). Sri Lanka has set an ambitious target of 3 million tourist arrivals for 2026 after falling short of its goal last year. However, total arrivals in the first half of 2026 stood at 1,146,573, down 15.1% from the same period a year earlier, reflecting weaker arrivals in recent months amid disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.
