Romania Q4 GDP Growth Weakest Since 2021

Romania’s GDP grew by 0.1% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2025, sharply easing from a one-year high of 1.7% gain in the previous three-month period, preliminary estimates showed. While this marked the nineteenth consecutive quarter of economic expansion, it represented the weakest pace of growth since the third quarter of 2021. On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the country’s GDP contracted by 1.9%, slipping further from a 0.2% drop in the previous three-month period.

Romania’s GDP expanded by 1.7% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2025, slightly above from the second estimate of 1.6% and accelerating from a 0.3% growth in the previous three-month period. This marked the fastest economic expansion since Q3 2024, driven by growth in gross fixed capital formation (+5.0%), and household consumption (+1.4%). Net external demand also contributed positively, as exports rose by 5.3%, while imports grew at a softer 3.1%. In contrast, government spending decreased by 3.9%. On the production side, the strongest gains were recorded in agriculture, forestry, and fishing (+9.2%), information and communication (+6.1%), and construction (+12.2%). On a seasonal adjusted quarterly basis, the economy contracted 0.2%, marking the first decline since Q2 2024, reversing the upwardly revised 1.1% in the preceding period.

Romania’s GDP expanded 1.6% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2025, matching initial data and accelerating from 0.3% growth in the previous quarter, second estimates showed. This marked the sharpest economic expansion since Q3 2024, supported by growth in gross fixed capital formation (+8.3%), government spending (+3.2%), and household consumption (+0.5%). Net external demand also contributed positively, as exports rose 3.8%, while imports increased at a slower 1.8%. On the production side, growth was strongest in agriculture, forestry, and fishing (+9.2%), information and communication (+6.1%), and construction (+12.1%). On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the economy contracted 0.2%, the first decline since Q2 2024, reversing the 1.0% expansion recorded in the previous period.
