Romania Trade Deficit Widens in July

Romania’s trade deficit widened to EUR 2.822 billion in July 2026 from EUR 2.700 billion in July 2025.

Exports increased 4.1% year-on-year to EUR 9.247 billion, supported by higher shipments to non-EU countries (+17.9%), while exports to EU countries declined (-1.2%).

Meanwhile, imports rose 4.2% to EUR 12.070 billion, mainly due to higher purchases from both EU (+4.3%) and non-EU markets (+4.0%).

During the January-July period, exports increased by 3.1% to EUR 58.270 billion, driven by higher sales of manufactured goods classified by raw materials (+6.8%), food and live animals (+7.9%), and machinery and transport equipment (+1.4%).

Meanwhile, imports rose 2.0% to EUR 77.546 billion, with arrivals increasing for machinery and transport equipment (+3.2%), manufactured goods classified by raw materials (+0.3%), and chemical and related products (+3.7%).

Over this period, the country’s trade gap was EUR 19.277 billion, down EUR 0.2 billion, or 1.1%, from the same period last year.

Romania’s trade deficit widened to EUR 2.961 billion in June 2026 from EUR 2.397 billion in the corresponding month a year earlier. Exports increased 5.9% year-on-year to EUR 8.702 billion, supported by higher shipments to both EU (4.8%) and non-EU countries (8.8%). Meanwhile, imports rose 9.9% to EUR 11.663 billion, mainly due to higher purchases from both EU (10.9%) and non-EU markets (7.2%). During the January-June period, exports increased by 3.0% to EUR 49.038 billion, driven by higher sales of food and live animals (7.8%), manufactured goods classified by raw materials (7.0%), and machinery and transport equipment (1.7%). Meanwhile, imports rose 1.7% to EUR 65.498 billion, with arrivals increasing for machinery and transport equipment (2.0%), manufactured goods classified by raw materials (0.4%), and chemical and related products (2.9%). Over this period, the country’s trade gap was EUR 16.460 billion, lower by EUR 0.3 billion, or 2.0%, compared to the same period last year.

Romania Trade Gap Narrows Slightly in May
Romania’s trade deficit narrowed slightly to EUR 2.616 billion in May 2026 from EUR 2.762 billion in the corresponding month a year earlier. Exports grew by 4.5% year-on-year to EUR 8.325 billion, driven by stronger shipments to both EU (3%) and non-EU markets (8.6%). Meanwhile, imports rose by 1.9% to EUR 10.941 billion, supported by higher purchases from EU (1%) and non-EU countries (4.6%). In the first five months of the year, the country’s trade deficit was EUR 13.506 billion, lower by EUR 0.9 billion or 6.2% compared to the same period a year ago. Over this period, exports increased by 2.4% to EUR 40.337 billion, supported by higher sales for animal and vegetable oils (119.7%), crude materials (8.7%), food and live animals (8.2%), and mineral fuels (7.5%). In contrast, imports rose at a softer 0.1% to EUR 53.843 billion, with arrivals rising for mineral fuels (7.4%) and machinery and transport equipment (1.4%), while decreasing for animal and vegetable oils (-8.6%).
