Peru's economy advanced 1.55 percent year-on-year in July of 2017, slowing from a 3.64 percent rise in the previous period and below market expectations of 2.35 percent. It is the smallest expansion of the economy since April, as contraction in fisheries (-49.4 percent from 52 percent in June), after twelve months of increases, weighed on growth. Also, manufacturing tumbled 6.3 percent, following a 2 percent increase in June, negatively affected by a 64.5 percent decrease in processing and conservation of fish, especially anchovy. In contrast, growth was recorded in: agriculture (9 percent vs 6.4 percent in June); mining (1.8 percent vs 6.2 percent); construction (3.8 percent vs 3.5 percent); telecommunications (9.5 percent vs 10 percent) and wholesale and retail trade (1.2 percent vs 1.7 percent).

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru trimmed its benchmark interest rate by 25 bps to 3.50 percent on September 14th of 2017, following no change in August 10th and a 25 bps cut in July 13th, 2017. The decision surprised consensus expectations of 3.75 percent and leaves the key rate at its lowest since November of 2015. Policymakers underscored the downturn in 12-month inflation expectations; the subdued economic growth; the gradual improvement of the global economy; and the expected transitory nature of recent increases in food costs and water tariffs. Consumer prices in Peru rose 3.17 percent year-on-year in August of 2017, compared to a 2.85 percent increase in July. It was the highest inflation rate since April.

Growth was recorded in fisheries (128.7 percent), agriculture (1.1 percent), mining (1.9 percent), manufacturing (3.5 percent), trade (0.9 percent), transportation (2.4 percent), restaurants and hotels (1.3 percent), telecommunications (6.5 percent), financial services and insurance (0.4 percent), utilities (1.6 percent) and services to companies (0.1 percent). On the other hand, construction sector contracted 2.9 percent. On the expenditure side, the expansion was mainly driven by household expenditure which grew 2 percent and a 11.7 percent surge in exports.
