Peru GDP Annual Growth Rate at 3.20 percent  
Peru's economy advanced 3.2 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018, quickening from 2.2 percent in the previous period. It was the strongest growth since the third quarter of 2016 (4.4 percent), mainly boosted by gains in: trade, maintenance and vehicle repair automotive and motorcycles (2.7% vs 1.7% in Q4); transportation, warehousing and related (5.0% vs 4.2%); accommodation services and restaurants (3.5% vs 1.7%); finance and insurance (4.7% vs 2.9%); business services (2.7% vs 1.9%); public administration (4.3% vs 3.7%); agriculture (5.7% vs 4.0%); fishing (6.2% vs -51.4%) and manufacturing (1.0% vs -5.5%). Meanwhile, output slowed in the mining sector (0.6% vs 2.6%), construction (5.1% vs 9.1%) and telecommunications (5.0% vs 7.8%). On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the Peruvian GDP expanded 1.5 percent, the most since the third quarter of 2016 and compared to a downwardly revised 0.6 percent rise in the fourth quarter.

The economy of Peru expanded 7.81 percent year-on-year in April 2018, compared to a 3.93 percent rise in March and better than market expectations of a 5.7 percent increase. It was the strongest growth since April 2013, mainly driven by gains in fishing (81 percent), amid abundant anchovy catches; manufacturing (20 percent), due to a surge in fishmeal processing; and construction (11 percent). April figure was also helped by the basis effect associated to El Nino phenomena which in April 2017 affected fishing, agriculture and construction. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the economy grew 1.81 percent.

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru kept the benchmark interest rate at 2.75 percent on 7 June 2018 after leaving it unchanged back on 10 May 2018. The current rate is the lowest interest rate since August of 2010. Policymakers underscored inflationary trends explained by diluting supply-side shocks and economic activity running below its long-term potential. Consumer prices rose 0.94 percent year-on-year in May climbing from a near 8-year low of 0.48 percent in the previous month. The figure came in below the central bank's target range of 1 to 3 percent.
