Peru’s trade surplus widened to USD 588 million in November of 2017 from a USD 370 million surplus a year earlier. Exports soared 21.4 percent year-on-year in November to USD 4111 million, nudged by sales of traditional goods (+28.7 percent), namely copper and gold. Shipments of non-traditional goods went up 4.2 percent, mainly agricultural goods, chemicals and textiles. Imports increased 16.8 percent to USD 3524 million, with purchases of supply goods jumping 24.3 percent; capital goods 14.3 percent; and consumption goods 8.1 percent.

The economy of Peru rose 1.78 percent year-on-year in November of 2017, following a 2.99 percent expansion in the prior month and missing market expectations of a 2.45 percent growth. It was the slowest increase in economic activity since April last year. Output slowed down in construction (5.33 percent from 14.25 percent in October); telecommunications (6.95 percent from 9.26 percent) while shrank significantly in fisheries (-45.64 percent from -12.43 percent) and manufacturing (-6.58 percent from 1.64 percent). Meanwhile, the mining sector rebounded (4.96 percent from -1.60 percent), driven by higher production of iron (29.3 percent); molybdenum (15.3 percent); zinc (9.2 percent); lead (5.6 percent) and copper (4.7 percent). Additional gains came from: transportation and warehousing (4.18 percent from 3.77 percent) and internal trade (1.74 percent from 1.37 percent). Considering the January to November period of 2017, the economy advanced 2.38 percent over a year earlier.

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru cut the benchmark interest by 25 bps to 3.00 percent on its 11 January 2017 meeting following no changes on its 14 December 2017 meeting. The decision matched consensus expectations and leaves the key rate at its lowest since December of 2010. Policymakers underscored that inflation declined markedly once again to 1.4 percent in December, the lowest since May 2010. The inflation stayed at the lower band of the target range for the second consecutive year due mainly to the reversal of the supply shocks and slower economic activity. Inflation is projected to continue declining in the first months of 2018 and to converge thereafter to 2.0 percent.

Peru GDP Annual Growth Rate at 2.50 percent  
Peru's economy advanced 2.5% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2017, following a 2.4% growth in the previous period. Increases were recorded in agriculture (5.5%), namely harvest cranberry (70%), paddy rice (47.7%) and cacao (22.4%); petrol, gas and mining (4.2%), namely zinc (10.2%), iron (36.6%), molybdenum (20%), gold (5.5%) and copper (4%); construction (5.6%); utilities (1.7%); trade (1.4%); transportation (1.5%); restaurants and hotels (1.3%); telecommunications (8.5%); financial services and insurance (1.8%) and services to companies (1.2%). In contrast, output contracted for fisheries (-42.8%) and manufacturing (-3.0%), mainly wood and furniture (-27.7%) and food (-11.0%). On the expenditure side, the expansion was driven by increases in household (2.3%) and government (5.9%) and a rebound in gross fixed capital formation (4.1%). Exports went up 4.1% and imports jumped 9.3%.
