The consumer price inflation in Norway rose to 3.0 percent year-on-year in July 2018 from 2.6 percent in the previous month and above market consensus of 2.6 percent. It was the highest rate since December 2016, as inflation increased for: housing and utilities (6.4 percent vs 5.6 percent in June); transport (3.6 percent vs 3.4 percent); food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.3 percent vs 0.4 percent); furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance (2.5 percent vs 1.5 percent); recreation and culture (2.2 percent vs 1.9 percent); and restaurants and hotels (3.0 percent vs 2.9 percent). Meanwhile, inflation eased for miscellaneous goods and services (1.2 percent vs 1.3 percent). Annual core inflation rate, which is adjusted for tax changes and excludes energy products, went up to 1.4 percent in July from 1.1 percent in June. On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased by 0.7 percent and the core index by 0.6 percent.

Producer prices in Norway rose by 22.6 percent year-on-year in July 2018, accelerating from a 20 percent increase in the prior month. It was the highest producer inflation since December 2010, as cost increased at a faster pace for: manufacturing (9 percent from 8.5 percent in June); extraction and related services (42.9 percent from 37.4 percent); and electricity, gas and steam (67.6 percent from 55.6 percent). Meantime, mining and quarrying inflation eased to 6 percent in July from 7 percent in June. On a monthly basis, producer prices increased by 1.1 percent.

It was the steepest increase in industrial production since September 2017, as extraction and related services output rebounded (1.8 percent vs -7 percent in May), mainly driven by extraction of natural gas. Meantime, manufacturing output growth picked up to 0.6 percent in June from 0.5 percent in May, driven by a rise in food, beverages and tobacco (5.4 percent vs 4 percent); machinery and equipment (4.1 percent vs 1.2 percent); fabricated metal products (4.8 percent vs 2.2 percent); ships, boats and oil platforms (15 percent vs 7.4 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial production jumped 4.7 percent.

Norway's industrial confidence indicator jumped to 9.2 in the second quarter of 2018 from an upwardly revised 6.8 in the previous period and easily beating market estimates of 7.0. It was the highest reading since the fourth quarter 2010, as manufacturers reported an increase in total production of capital, intermediate and consumers goods. The overall employment showed a moderate rise, with producers of intermediate goods reporting strong growth while those of consumer goods and capital goods seeing a slight increase. Meantime, the general outlook for the third quarter of 2018 was clearly positive for the different industrial groupings. Industry leaders reported that investment plans are adjusted upwards and employment is expected to increase. Also, new orders from both the domestic market and export market were projected to grow and the total stock of orders is set to increase as well.
