Norway Industry Confidence at 6.40 Index Points  
Norwegian industrial confidence index jumped to 6.4 in the fourth quarter of 2017 from an upwardly revised 3.2 in the previous three-month period. It was the highest reading since the second quarter of 2014, as Norwegian industrial managers reported a production increase in both capital and intermediate goods while consumer goods output was almost unchanged from the previous period. Moreover, the general outlook for the first quarter of 2018 was clearly positive, with the share of business leaders who feel optimistic about the coming quarter being greater than in the previous survey. Industry leaders reported that investment plans were adjusted upwards and new orders from both the domestic market and export market are expected to increase. Also, the total stock of orders is set to rise, as well as employment.

Norway Consumer Confidence at 17.30 Index Points  
Norway's consumer confidence jumped to 17.3 in the December quarter of 2017 from a downwardly revised 15.7 in the previous period. It marked the highest reading since the third quarter of 2014, largely reflecting improved optimism in southern Norway. In the three months to December 2017, consumers' views on their own financial conditions improved markedly (24.9 from 23.7 in Q3) and their expectations toward the country's economy in the last twelve months increased further (13.2 from 11.6). At the same time, households' assessment toward their own financial situations in the last twelve months were virtually stable (18.7 from 18.8) while their expectations toward the country's economy next year softened (9.5 from 17.5). Norway's consumer confidence hit a 24-year low in early 2016, due to a plunge in crude oil price.

Norway Producer Prices Change at 7.30 percent  
Producer prices in Norway increased 7.3 percent from a year earlier in December of 2017, following a 9.7 percent gain in the prior month. It was the lowest producer price inflation since August, as cost rose at a softer pace for extraction and related services (8.3 percent from 17.8 percent in November), and mining and quarrying (10.4 percent from 11.1 percent). Meantime, cost of manufacturing went up 6.9 percent, after 6 percent in November, and prices of electricity, gas and steam rebounded 5.7 percent, following a 8 percent drop. On a monthly basis, producer prices jumped 2.9 percent.

Norway Inflation Rate at 1.60 percent  
Norway's consumer price inflation rose to a three-month high of 1.6 percent year-on-year in December 2017 from 1.1 percent in the previous month and slightly above market consensus of 1.5 percent. Main upward pressure came from: housing and utilities (2.4 percent vs 1.4 percent in November); transport (3.1 percent vs 2.4 percent); and food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.6 percent vs -0.8 percent). Meanwhile, inflation was steady for miscellaneous goods and services (at 2.1 percent), and slowed for recreation and culture (1.9 percent vs 2.1 percent). Annual core inflation rate, which is adjusted for tax changes and excludes energy products, rose to 1.4 percent from 1 percent in November, also above market expectations of 1.2 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices were unchanged while the core index went up 0.1 percent. Considering 2017 as a whole, the CPI rose 1.8 percent.

Petroleum activities and ocean transport rose at slower pace (1.5 percent from 3.9 percent in Q2), fixed investment growth eased (0.3 percent from 1.5 percent) and government spending expanded at a slower 0.5 percent (from 0.8 percent in Q3). Net trade contributed positively, as exports advanced 0.9 percent (from 2.1 percent in Q2) while imports shrank 1.8 percent (from -0.2 percent).
