Considering January to October 2017, the trade surplus went up by 40.5 percent from the same period of 2016 to NOK 148.09 billion.

Norway GDP Growth Rate at 0.70 percent  
The Norwegian economy grew by 0.7 percent quarter-on-quarter in the three months to September of 2017, after a 1.1 percent expansion in the previous period. Petroleum activities and ocean transport rose at slower pace (1.5 percent from 3.9 percent in Q2), fixed investment growth eased (0.3 percent from 1.5 percent) and government spending expanded at a slower 0.5 percent (from 0.8 percent in Q3). Meantime, household consumption was virtually stable (0.6 percent from 0.7 percent). Net trade contributed positively, as exports advanced 0.9 percent (from 2.1 percent in Q2) while imports shrank 1.8 percent (from -0.2 percent). Mainland GDP, which excludes oil and gas exploration and transport, advanced by 0.6 percent in the second quarter, the same pace as in the previous period.

Norway's consumer confidence jumped to 17.3 in the December quarter of 2017 from a downwardly revised 15.7 in the previous period. It marked the highest reading since the third quarter of 2014, largely reflecting improved optimism in southern Norway. In the three months to December 2017, consumers' views on their own financial conditions improved markedly (24.9 from 23.7 in Q3) and their expectations toward the country's economy in the last twelve months increased further (13.2 from 11.6). At the same time, households' assessment toward their own financial situations in the last twelve months were virtually stable (18.7 from 18.8) while their expectations toward the country's economy next year softened (9.5 from 17.5). Norway's consumer confidence hit a 24-year low in early 2016, due to a plunge in crude oil price.

Norway's consumer prices rose 1.2 percent from a year earlier in October 2017, following a 1.6 percent gain in the prior month while market expected 1.4 percent. It was the lowest inflation rate since February 2013, as prices went up less for both recreation and culture (2 percent from 2.7 percent) and restaurants and hotels (3.2 percent from 3.3 percent). Prices increased at a faster pace for miscellaneous goods and services (2.3 percent from 1.8 percent).In addition, cost fell for : clothing and footwear (-0.9 percent from 1.2 percent), food and non-alcoholic beverages (-1.2 percent from -1.9 percent), and furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance (-2.8 percent from -2.8 percent). Annual core inflation rate, which is adjusted for tax changes and excludes energy products, went up 1.1 percent from 1 percent in September. On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged up 0.1 percent and core consumer prices went up 0.3 percent.

Norway's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.1 percent in the three months to September 2017 from 4.3 percent in the April-June period and below market expectations of 4.2 percent. It was the lowest jobless rate since the January-March 2015 period, as the number of unemployed went down by 6,000 from the previous non-overlapping three-month period to 114,000 while the number of employed declined by 1,000 to 2.651 million. A year earlier, the unemployment rate stood at 4.9 percent.

Norwegian industrial confidence index fell to 2.3 in the third quarter of 2017 from a downwardlly revised 3.7 in the previous period. The decline was due to a drop in the production of consumer goods, as lower output was seen for food and beverage industry. Meantime, manufacturers of capital goods were showing signs of improvement and the reduction in output was leveling off. At the same time, the output of intermediate goods increased. Employment was more or less unchanged. Producers of intermediate goods reported some increase in employment while there was still a decline for producers of capital goods. General outlook for the coming quarter is positive, as industry leaders report that investment plans are adjusted upwards and new orders from both the domestic market and export market are expected to increase. The total stock of orders is also expected to increase. Meanwhile, employment will see a further drop.
