Norway Manufacturing Output Recovers in March

Norway’s manufacturing production rose 2.0% month-over-month in March 2026, rebounding from a 0.4% decline in the previous month. This marked the largest monthly increase since April 2025, driven by a rebound in output of food, beverages and tobacco (1.0% vs -1.6% in February), textiles, wearing apparel and leather (0.3% vs -0.3%), wood and wood products (1.9% vs -0.8%), rubber, plastic and mineral products (2.5% vs -2.4%), and ships, boats and oil platforms (5.1% vs -2.8%). Further gains were seen in paper and paper products (7.9% vs 3.3%), machinery and equipment (2.8% vs 1.1%), fabricated metal products (1.8% vs 0.4%), computer and electrical equipment (2.4% vs 0.7%), and transport equipment n.e.c. (1.6% vs 0.5%). Meanwhile, production declined in refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals (-1.9% vs -1.3%) and basic metals (-0.4% vs 0.5%). On a yearly basis, manufacturing output grew 3.2% in March, rebounding from a 0.1% decline in the previous month.

Norway’s manufacturing production dropped 0.4% month-over-month in February 2026, following a downwardly revised 0.2% fall in the previous month. This marked the third consecutive monthly drop, due to renewed declines in the output of refined petroleum, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals (-1.2% vs 4.3% in January) and food, beverages, and tobacco (-2.1% vs 1.2%), as well as sharper falls in the production of ships, boats, and oil platforms (-2.1% vs -1.1%) and rubber, plastic, and mineral products (-2.4% vs -0.2%). Growth also slowed in repair and installation of machinery (0.2% vs 1.3%). Meanwhile, production rebounded for fabricated metal products (0.4% vs -1.0%), computer and electrical equipment (0.6% vs -1.9%), and machinery and equipment (0.8% vs -3.3%). On a yearly basis, manufacturing output edged down 0.1%, after rising 2.2% in January.

This was the second consecutive month of decline, weighed down by lower output in fabricated metal products (-1.0% vs -1.0% in December), computer and electrical equipment (-1.9% vs -0.8%), machinery and equipment (-3.8% vs -1.0%), and ships, boats, and oil platforms (-0.8% vs 2.4%). Partially offsetting these declines, production rebounded in food, beverage, and tobacco (1.3% vs -0.7%) and in repair and installation of machinery (1.3% vs -0.1%), while growth accelerated in refined petroleum, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals (4.3% vs 0.9%). On a yearly basis, manufacturing output increased 2.2%, following a 1.2% rise in December.
