Montenegro current account gap rose by 4.9 percent to EUR 304.5 million in the first quarter of 2018 from EUR 290.3 million in the corresponding period a year earlier. The goods deficit widened to EUR 389.5 million from EUR 362.0 million in the first quarter of 2017 and the primary income surplus narrowed to EUR 10.8 million from EUR 11.8 million. On the other hand, the services surplus increased to EUR 18.0 million from EUR 8.5 million and the secondary income surplus went up to EUR 56.1 million from EUR 51.4 million.

Inflation was steady for communication (1.8%, the same as in March); furniture & household equipment (2%), health (0.3%) and restaurant & hotels (6.4%). Additionally, prices advanced faster for clothing & footwear (7.7% from 6.9%) while cost rose at a softer pace for housing & utilities (0.8% from 0.9%); transport (3.7% from 4.4%); miscellaneous goods & services (1.6% from 1.9%) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (27.1% from 30.8%). Meanwhile, cost rebounded for recreation & culture (0.1% from -0.1%) while continued to decline for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-0.1% from -0.6%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged up 0.1%, after a 0.2% increase in March.
