Consumer prices in Montenegro rose 2.6 percent year-on-year in January of 2018, following a 1.9 percent gain in the previous month. Prices increased faster for clothing and footwear (6.3 percent compared to 3.8 percent in December); communication (1.8 percent compared to 0.2 percent); alcoholic beverages and tobacco (30.4 percent compared to 14.8 percent) and restaurants and hotels (6.9 percent compared to 5.4 percent). Additionally, prices declined less for furnishings and household equipment (-0.6 percent compared to -0.7 percent). Meanwhile, cost fell further for food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.5 percent compared to -0.1 percent). In addition, prices slowed for housing and utilities (0.4 percent compared to 0.7 percent); transport (3.9 percent compared to 6.4 percent) and miscellaneous good and services (1.8 percent compared to 1.9 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 1.0 percent, after a 0.2 percent drop in the prior month.

Considering full 2017, the country's current account gap rose to EUR 799.3 million from EUR 714.9 million in 2016.

The industrial production index in Montenegro increased 1.5 percent year-on-year in December of 2017, easing from a 4 percent surge in the previous month. It was the weakest growth in industrial activity since September last year when it contracted 7 percent, as mining rose much less (70.6 percent vs 147.3 percent in November). In addition, the manufacturing sector tumbled (-10.9 percent vs 8.9 percent), mainly due to declines in production of basic pharmaceutical products (-33.4 percent); printing and reproduction of recorded media (-44.6 percent) and leather and leather products (-25 percent). By contrast, output rebounded for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (7.2 percent vs -23.5 percent). For whole 2017, industrial activity fell 4.2 percent. On a monthly basis, industrial production declined 1.6 percent, after jumping 11.4 percent in November.

Meantime, imports increased 11.7 percent to 2.30 billion, driven by purchases of mineral fuels, lubricants & related (36.5 percent) and manufactured goods (20 percent), namely iron & steel (38.7 percent) and leather & leather products (31 percent). Serbia was the major trade partner (17.8 percent of total sales vs 21.5 of total imports).
