Malta Industrial Production at 4-Month High

Malta’s annual industrial production rose by 5.1% year-on-year in August 2026, following an upwardly revised 4.0% increase in the previous month.

This marked the highest reading since April, driven by higher output in the manufacturing sector (2.9% vs 2.6% in July), particularly in the production of wood, paper products, and printing (44.9%), other manufacturing (8.1%), and computer, electronic and optical products, and motor vehicles (3.5%).

By industrial grouping, output also increased for energy (33.9% vs 23%), while it recovered for consumer durable goods (0.4% vs -1.1%) and intermediate goods (3.5% vs -3.2%).

In contrast, production growth eased for consumer goods (8.1% vs 12.5%), driven by consumer non-durable goods (9.1% vs 13.8%), while it declined further for capital goods (-8.0% vs -7.4%).

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production edged up 0.1% in August, down from a revised 3.2% increase in July, marking the smallest gain since May.

Malta’s industrial production rose by 2.2% year-on-year in July 2026, rebounding from a downwardly revised 2.3% fall in the previous month. This marked the highest reading since April, mainly driven by a recovery in the manufacturing sector (0.7% vs -2.2% in June), as higher production of wood, paper products, and printing (+29.5%) and other manufacturing (+2.4%) offset declines in rubber, plastic, and other non-metallic mineral products (-7.0%), and computer, electronic, and optical products and motor vehicles (-5.1%). By industrial grouping, output recovered in energy production (22.8% vs -3.5%), consumer goods (8.9% vs -7.4%), consumer durable goods (1.4% vs -14.9%), and consumer non-durable goods (9.7% vs -6.5%). In contrast, production dropped further in capital goods (-9.0% vs -0.9%), while activity fell in intermediate goods (-3.2% vs 2.6%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production grew by 1.9% in July, following an upwardly revised 0.2% increase in June.

Malta Industrial Activity Shrinks in June
Industrial production in Malta fell 1.5% year-on-year in June 2026, reversing an upwardly revised 1.0% increase in May. Manufacturing output declined 1.4%, following a 1.4% gain in the previous month, as lower production of food products (-0.6%) and chemical and pharmaceutical products (-1.4%) outweighed a sharp increase in wood, paper products and printing (9.0%). By industrial grouping, output fell further for consumer goods (-7.6% vs -3.8%) and non-durable consumer goods (-6.8% vs -5.9%), while durable consumer goods production swung to a 15.0% contraction from a 15.1% increase. Meanwhile, declines eased for capital goods (-2.9% vs -7.4%) and energy (-3.5% vs -6.8%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production decreased 0.6%, following a downwardly revised 5.0% drop in May.
