Malta Industrial Activity Shrinks in June

Malta’s industrial production rose by 2.2% year-on-year in July 2026, rebounding from a downwardly revised 2.3% fall in the previous month. This marked the highest reading since April, mainly driven by a recovery in the manufacturing sector (0.7% vs -2.2% in June), as higher production of wood, paper products, and printing (+29.5%) and other manufacturing (+2.4%) offset declines in rubber, plastic, and other non-metallic mineral products (-7.0%), and computer, electronic, and optical products and motor vehicles (-5.1%). By industrial grouping, output recovered in energy production (22.8% vs -3.5%), consumer goods (8.9% vs -7.4%), consumer durable goods (1.4% vs -14.9%), and consumer non-durable goods (9.7% vs -6.5%). In contrast, production dropped further in capital goods (-9.0% vs -0.9%), while activity fell in intermediate goods (-3.2% vs 2.6%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production grew by 1.9% in July, following an upwardly revised 0.2% increase in June.

Industrial production in Malta fell 1.5% year-on-year in June 2026, reversing an upwardly revised 1.0% increase in May. Manufacturing output declined 1.4%, following a 1.4% gain in the previous month, as lower production of food products (-0.6%) and chemical and pharmaceutical products (-1.4%) outweighed a sharp increase in wood, paper products and printing (9.0%). By industrial grouping, output fell further for consumer goods (-7.6% vs -3.8%) and non-durable consumer goods (-6.8% vs -5.9%), while durable consumer goods production swung to a 15.0% contraction from a 15.1% increase. Meanwhile, declines eased for capital goods (-2.9% vs -7.4%) and energy (-3.5% vs -6.8%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production decreased 0.6%, following a downwardly revised 5.0% drop in May.

Industrial production in Malta increased 0.8% year-on-year in May 2026, easing from a revised 6.2% growth in the previous month. Output in the manufacturing sector slowed (1.1% vs. 6.9% in April), weighed down particularly by declines in other manufacturing (-11.4%), rubber, plastic, and other non-metallic mineral products (-7.6%), and food products and beverages (-5.9%). Among the main industrial groupings, output declined for consumer goods (-0.6% vs. 6.4%) and consumer non-durable goods (-2.3% vs. 6.8%), while it fell further for capital goods (-7.7% vs. -0.6%). At the same time, production growth moderated for intermediate goods (8.2% vs. 11.5%), while energy output fell at a softer pace (-6.8% vs. -9.2%). In contrast, output accelerated for consumer durable goods (15.1% vs. 3.1%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial activity decreased 3.7% in May, reversing a revised 3.5% growth in April.
