Industrial production in Malta surged 7.4 percent year-on-year in August of 2019, following a downwardly revised 0.9 percent rise in the prior month. It was the biggest gain since November of 2018, production rebounded for energy (0.2 percent vs -4.5 percent in July) and intermediate goods (2.6 percent vs -6.6 percent). In addition, consumer goods output advanced faster (14.8 percent vs 5.9 percent), particularly durable consumer (2.0 percent vs -4.1 percent) and non-durable consumer goods (15.4 percent vs 6.5 percent). On the other hand, capital goods production went up at a softer pace (4.6 percent vs 5.7 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial output increased 5.5 percent, rebounding from a 0.8 percent drop in July.

Unemployment rose among people aged 15-24 years to 9.1 percent from 8.4 percent in Q2 2018 but decreased in the 25-74 age group to 2.7 percent from 3.1 percent a year ago. Meantime, the activity rate rose to 67 percent from 63.3 percent a year earlier and the employment rate went up to 64.6 percent from 61.1 percent in the corresponding period of 2018.
