Annual inflation rate in Malta increased to 2.5% in September of 2018 from 2.4% in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since December of 2012, as prices rose further for food & non-alcoholic beverages (3.3% from 2.4% in August); transport (3.8% from 3.2%); housing & utilities (0.6% from 0.5%) and miscellaneous goods & services (2.2% from 1.5%). On the other hand, cost slowed for restaurant & hotels (4.1% from 4.7%); furniture & household equipment (2.5% from 2.6%); health (0.2% from 0.5%) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (1.3% from 1.4%). Meanwhile, prices continued to decline for recreation & culture (-1% from -1.5%); clothing & footwear (-1.1% from -4.3%); communication (-1.9% from -0.1%) and education (-0.8%, the same as in August). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 0.8%, after a 0.7% gain in August.

Output rebounded for both capital goods (4.6 percent from -6.6 percent in July) and consumer goods (0.3 percent from -10.3 percent), namely durable consumer goods (11.3 percent from -3.6 percent). Meanwhile, production continued to decrease for energy (-1.8 percent from -0.7 percent) and it fell for intermediate goods (-1.1 percent from 0.3 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output went up 9.2 percent, after a 5.8 percent decline in July.

The unemployment rate in Malta went down to 3.8 percent in the second quarter of 2018 compared to a downwardly revised 3.9 percent in the same period of the previous year. However, the number of unemployed persons rose by 272 to 9,159 and employed increased by 13,002 to 231,152. Also, 75.4 percent of unemployed people stated that they had been seeking work for less than 12 months. By genders, the jobless rate decreased for women (3.6 percent from 4 percent in Q2 2017) while it rose for men (4 percent from 3.9 percent). Meanwhile, the activity rate went up to 73.5 percent from 71.7 percent, with the highest rate being recorded among people aged 25-54 (85.4 percent). Thus, the employment rate went up to 70.6 percent from 68.9 percent.

Malta GDP Annual Growth Rate at 5.90 percent  
Malta’s gross domestic products expanded 5.9 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2018, following an upwardly revised 4.9 percent advance in the previous period. Output rose faster for household consumption (7.1 percent from 5 percent in Q1) and government spending (11.5 percent from 2.5 percent). Additionally, gross fixed investment grew 12.2 percent, compared to a 15.2 percent drop in the three months to March period. Meanwhile, net trade contributed negatively to growth, as exports showed no growth (1.6 percent in Q1) and imports increased 4.6 percent (2.6 percent in Q1).
