Malta Producer Prices Change at 3.40 percent  
Producer prices in Malta increased 3.40 percent year-on-year in October 2018, from 3.85 percent in the prior month. It was the lowest producer inflation since January, as cost went up at a softer pace for intermediate goods (7.07 percent vs 8.27 percent in September), while prices remained flat for energy and advanced at the same pace for capital goods (0.33 percent). Contrarily, prices rose slightly more for consumer goods (1.62 percent vs 1.59 percent), led by non-durable goods (1.79 percent vs 1.76 percent) while cost of durable goods was unchanged. On a monthly basis, producer prices edged down 0.35 percent, following a 0.44 percent gain in September.

Meantime, prices continued to decline for recreation & culture (-1 percent, the same as in September); communication (-1.1 percent from -1.9 percent) and education (-1.6 percent from -0.8 percent) while cost rebounded for clothing & footwear (0.4 percent from -1.1 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 1.2 percent, following a 0.8 percent drop in September.

The unemployment rate in Malta went down to 3.8 percent in the second quarter of 2018 compared to a downwardly revised 3.9 percent in the same period of the previous year. However, the number of unemployed persons rose by 272 to 9,159 and employed increased by 13,002 to 231,152. Also, 75.4 percent of unemployed people stated that they had been seeking work for less than 12 months. By genders, the jobless rate decreased for women (3.6 percent from 4 percent in Q2 2017) while it rose for men (4 percent from 3.9 percent). Meanwhile, the activity rate went up to 73.5 percent from 71.7 percent, with the highest rate being recorded among people aged 25-54 (85.4 percent). Thus, the employment rate went up to 70.6 percent from 68.9 percent.
