Malta's industrial production declined 1.2 percent year-on-year in October of 2017, following an upwardly revised 5.6 percent rise in the previous month. It was the worst contraction in industrial activity since October last year, as output fell for intermediate goods (- 7 percent vs -7.4 percent in September) and durable consumer goods (-4.9 percent vs 3.7 percent). Also, production slowed for energy (3.3 percent vs 7.3 percent); capital goods (3.3 percent vs 14.4 percent) and consumer goods (0.8 percent vs 13.3 percent), with non-durable consumer goods rising much less (1.4 percent vs 14 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production shrank 5.9 percent, compared to a downwardly revised 0.4 percent drop in September.

Malta Producer Prices Change at 3.80 percent  
The industrial producer price index in Malta increased 3.8 percent year-on-year in October of 2017, quickening from a 3.7 percent rise in September. It was the highest producer inflation since August of 2011, driven mostly by an increase in prices of intermediate goods (8.7 percent compared to 8.25 percent in September). In contrast, cost of capital goods rose at a slightly softer pace (0.62 percent compared to 0.65 percent), prices fell more for non-durable goods (-0.52 percent compared to -0.11 percent) and durable goods (-0.59 percent compared to -0.11 percent) and were flat for energy (the same as in September). On a monthly basis, producer prices decreased 0.03 percent.
