Malta Inflation Rate at 1.40 percent  
Inflation rate in Malta increased to 1.4% in April of 2018 from 1.3% in the previous month. It was the highest inflation since November of 2017, as prices advanced faster for food & non-alcoholic beverages (1.2% from 0.9% in March); housing & utilities (1.2% from 1.1%); furniture & household equipment (3.9% from 3.7%) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (1.4% from 1.2%). On the other hand, prices slowed for restaurant & hotels (2% from 2.3%); miscellaneous goods & services (1.4% from 1.6%) and health (1.4% from 1.7%). Meanwhile, inflation was steady for transport (0.3%, the same as in March) and prices rebounded for communication (0.6% from -0.4%). Also, prices fell for recreation & culture (-0.1% from 1.2%); clothing & footwear (-1.9% from -2.5%) and education (-0.8% from -0.5%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 2.6%, following a 0.9% increase in March.

Malta's trade deficit increased by 23.5 percent year-on-year to EUR 200.8 million in March 2018 from EUR 162.6 million in the same month of the previous year. Exports declined 20.3 percent to EUR 236.4 million, mainly dragged down by lower sales of mineral fuel, lubricants & related materials (-46.5 percent) and machinery & transport equipment (-18.5 percent). Meanwhile, imports dropped 4.8 percent to EUR 437.2 million, due to lower purchases of mineral fuels, lubricants & related materials (-45.8 percent) while those for machinery & transport equipment increased (+63 percent). Considering the first quarter of 2018, the trade deficit narrowed to EUR 596.8 million from EUR 608.2 million, as imports went down 6.3 percent to EUR 1345.7 million and shipments fell 9.5 percent to EUR 748.9 million.

Industrial production in Malta dipped 4.8 percent year-on-year in March of 2018, following a 7.5 percent tumble in the previous month. It was the third straight decrease in industrial activity. Output shrank for intermediate goods (-19.2 percent vs -16.4 percent in February), capital goods (-3.4 percent vs 0.7 percent) and slowed markedly for energy (1.1 percent vs 5.0 percent). In contrast, production recovered for consumer goods (6.8 percent vs -7.3 percent), as output rebounded for non-durable goods (7.8 percent vs -7.9 percent) and fell less for durable goods (-3.5 percent vs -4.9 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial activity went up 0.7 percent, rebounding from a 2.4 percent fall in February.

Considering full 2017, the economy grew 6.6 percent, higher than 5.5 percent in 2016.
