The consumer price index in Malta increased 1.2 percent year-on-year in August of 2017, the same as in July. While inflation slowed mostly for food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.7 percent from 2.2 percent in July) and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house (2 percent from 3.2 percent); prices went up faster for transport (1.2 percent from 1 percent); housing utilities (1.2 percent from 1 percent); alcoholic beverages and tobacco (2.7 percent from 2.6 percent); recreation and culture (1.2 percent from 0.7 percent) and restaurants and hotels (1.5 percent from 1.2 percent). Also, cost increased at the same pace for health (2.1 percent) and education (5.3 percent), while it dropped for communication (-2.3 percent from -2.2 percent) and clothing and footwear (-1.1 percent, the same as in July). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.4 percent, following a 0.2 rise in July.

Imports tumbled 27.8 percent to EUR 494.6 million due to lower sales of machinery and transport equipment (-56.4 percent) and mineral fuels, lubricants and related (-21.2 percent). The biggest decreases were reported from: Canada (-99.6 percent),the UK (-42.4 percent), the Netherlands (-51.9 percent) and Italy (-38.4 percent). Considering the January to July period, exports plunged 32.1 percent and imports declined 12 percent, thus widening the trade deficit to EUR 2080.6 million from EUR 1839.6 million over a year earlier.

Malta's gross domestic product expanded 0.2 percent on quarter in the first three months of 2017, easing from a 1.8 percent growth in the previous period, as household spending rose at a slower 0.8 percent (1.9 percent in Q4 2016), while fixed investment contracted 4.8 percent (7.5 percent in Q4). Also, net external demand contributed negatively, as exports fell 4.8 percent (4.2 percent in Q4) and imports dropped at a slower 4 percent (4.4 percent in Q4). By contrast, government spending rebounded 2.3 percent after shrinking by 0.3 percent in the previous period.

Malta GDP Annual Growth Rate at 6.40 percent  
The Maltese economy advanced 6.4 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2017, following an upwardly revised 6.2 percent growth in the the previous period. It is the strongest expansion of gross domestic product since the first quarter of 2016, mainly driven by household expenditure which rose 5.1 percent, after a 3.8 percent increase in the previous period. Meanwhile, fixed investment slumped (-27.4 percent from 3.8 percent) and government spending contracted further (-9.9 percent from -3.7 percent) . Exports increased 5 percent (from a meager 0.2 percent rise in Q1) while imports declined at a faster pace (-6.5 percent from -1.6 percent in Q1).

Malta´s industrial production shrank 1.2 percent year-on-year in July 2017, following an upwardly revised 3.1 percent growth in the previous period. It is the first contraction in industrial production since November of 2016. Output fell for intermediate goods (-0.3 percent vs 14.5 percent in June) and also for consumer goods (-8.2 percent vs -10.1 percent), led by durable consumer goods (-6.6 percent, the same pace as in June) and non-durable consumer goods (-8.3 percent vs -10.3 percent). In addition, production slowed for capital goods (11 percent vs 16.1 percent). Conversely, energy rose faster (2.8 percent vs 2.2 percent). On a seasonally adjusted basis, industrial production slumped 3.1 percent.

The industrial producer price index in Malta increased 3.4 percent year-on-year in July 2017, following a revised 1.2 percent gain in June. It was the highest producer inflation since October 2012, mainly boosted by higher prices for intermediate goods (7.2 percent from 2.3 percent in June) and consumer goods (0.4 percent from 0.3 percent). Meanwhile, cost of capital goods rose at a slower pace (0.8 percent from 1 percent in June) while energy prices were unchanged. On a monthly basis, producer prices jumped 2.2 percent.
