Malta Producer Prices Change at -1.80 percent  
The industrial producer price index in Malta declined 1.8 percent year-on-year in April of 2017, following an upwardly revised 0.9 percent drop in March. It is the biggest fall in four months as deflation worsened for intermediate goods (-3.6 percent from -1.1 percent in March). In addition, cost of consumer goods continued to fall although at a slower pace (-0.9 percent from -1.5 percent) and energy prices continued to be flat. In contrast, upward pressure came from prices of capital goods (1 percent from 0.9 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices increased a meager 0.05 percent.

Consumer prices in Malta increased 1.1 percent year-on-year in April of 2017, easing slightly from a 1.2 percent rise in the previous period. It is the lowest inflation rate since December last year, as prices went up at a slower pace for food and non-alcoholic beverages (2.9 percent vs 3.7 percent in March), restaurants and hotels (1.1 percent vs 1.3 percent), housing and utilities (0.2 percent vs 0.3 percent) and furniture and household equipment (3.5 percent vs 3.6 percent). In contrast, cost rose faster for transport (0.8 percent vs 0.4 percent) and fell less for recreation and culture (-0.8 percent vs -1.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices jumped 2.6 percent compared to a 0.9 percent increase in March.

In the first quarter of the year, the trade gap narrowed to €750.8 million from €911.7 in the same period of 2016, as imports dropped 17.9 percent and exports shrank 18.3 percent.

It is the lowest expansion since December last year, as output went up at a slower pace for intermediate goods (4.5 percent vs 7.1 percent in February) and declined for capital goods (-0.4 percent vs 1.8 percent). In contrast, production jumped for energy (6.1 percent vs 1.8 percent) and consumer goods (6.9 percent vs 5.3 percent), as non-durable goods rose faster (8.6 percent vs 6.2 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial output went down 0.8 percent compared to a 1.2 percent increase in February.
