It was the highest inflation rate since January of 2013, as prices increased further for restaurant & hotels (4.4 percent from 4.2 percent in June); food & non-alcoholic beverages (2.2 percent from 1.9 percent); transport (1.7 percent from 1.4 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (1.6 percent from 1.3 percent) and furniture & household equipment (2.6 percent from 2.2 percent). Meanwhile, prices eased for housing & utilities (0.7 percent from 2.2 percent) and health (0.6 percent from 0.7 percent). Additionally, prices continued to fall for recreation & culture (-1.0 percent from -0.8 percent); clothing & footwear (-3.6 percent from -1.6 percent); communication (-0.5 percent from -0.4 percent) and education (-0.8 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.2 percent, slowing from a 1.3 percent gain in June.

On the other hand, imports jumped mostly due to higher purchases of machinery & transport equipment (+148.2 percent); chemicals (+20.9 percent) and semi-manufactured goods (+12.5 percent). Contrarily, imports declined for mineral fuels, lubricants & related (-49.2 percent).

Industrial production in Malta increased 1.1 percent year-on-year in June of 2018, recovering from a downwardly revised 2.2 percent drop in the previous month. It was the first gain in industrial activity since January of 2018, as production rebounded for consumer goods (8 percent from -1 percent in May), particularly durable consumer goods (3 percent from -4.2 percent) and non-durable consumer goods (8.4 percent from -0.8 percent). Meanwhile, output slowed for energy (1.6 percent from 6.4 percent) and production continued to decline for intermediate goods (-3 percent from -1.4 percent) and capital goods (-2.3 percent from -7.5 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output went up 0.3 percent, easing from an upwardly revised 2.3 percent gain in May.
