Malta Industrial Production Eases in May

Industrial production in Malta increased 0.8% year-on-year in May 2026, easing from a revised 6.2% growth in the previous month.

Output in the manufacturing sector slowed (1.1% vs. 6.9% in April), weighed down particularly by declines in other manufacturing (-11.4%), rubber, plastic, and other non-metallic mineral products (-7.6%), and food products and beverages (-5.9%).

Among the main industrial groupings, output declined for consumer goods (-0.6% vs. 6.4%) and consumer non-durable goods (-2.3% vs. 6.8%), while it fell further for capital goods (-7.7% vs. -0.6%).

At the same time, production growth moderated for intermediate goods (8.2% vs. 11.5%), while energy output fell at a softer pace (-6.8% vs. -9.2%).

In contrast, output accelerated for consumer durable goods (15.1% vs. 3.1%).

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial activity decreased 3.7% in May, reversing a revised 3.5% growth in April.

Malta Industrial Production Rebounds to 13-Month High
Industrial production in Malta rose by 7.3% year-on-year in April 2026, rebounding from a revised 3.8% decline in the previous month and marking the strongest growth since March 2025. The turnaround was mainly driven by higher output in the manufacturing sector (8.1% vs -5.0% in March), particularly in wood, paper products and printing (62.9%), followed by computer, electronic and optical products and motor vehicles (34.9%), and food products and beverages (13.0%). Among main industrial groupings, output accelerated for intermediate goods (11.0% vs 0.4%) and consumer durable goods (4.3% vs 0.1%), while consumer goods (7.6% vs -6.9%) and consumer non-durable goods (7.9% vs -7.4%) rebounded. In contrast, energy output declined (-9.2% vs 18.0%) and capital goods output fell further (-2.1% vs -0.3%).. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial activity rose by 5.2% in April.

Malta Industrial Output Falls in March
Industrial production in Malta fell 3.6% year-on-year in March 2026, reversing a revised 0.8% gain in the previous month. Manufacturing output declined (-4.7% vs 0.3% in February), weighed down by food products and beverages (-11.9%), computer, electronic and optical products and motor vehicles (-11.4%), and other manufacturing (-8.8%). Among industrial groupings, output declined in intermediate goods (-0.1% vs 11.3%) and fell further in consumer goods (-4.8% vs -3.8%) and non-durable goods (-5.7% vs -3.2%), while it contracted at a softer pace for capital goods (-2.8% vs -4.6%). In contrast, production growth strengthened in energy (18.1% vs 11.4%) and rebounded for durable goods (6% vs -9.3%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial activity dropped 1.4% in March.
