The Macau Monetary Authority lifted the base rate by 25 bps to 4.25% on September 17, 2026, mirroring the decision of its Hong Kong counterpart after the US Federal Reserve delivered the expected 25 bps hike on September 16.
It was the first interest rate hike since July 2023 in the Chinese special administrative region.
The move comes amid easing GDP growth and slowing inflation.
The latest data showed that Macau’s economy grew 0.3% year-on-year in Q2 2026, slowing sharply from a 7.1% expansion in Q1, while inflation eased for the second straight month to 1.12% in July 2026.
Under the linked exchange rate system, Macau’s base rate is set at par with Hong Kong’s base rate, which is typically 50 basis points above the lower end of the target range for the US federal funds rate.
