Macau Tourist Arrivals at 2764924.00  
Visitor arrivals in Macau increased by 8.0 percent year-on-year to 2.77 million in September 2019, after a 6.5 percent gain in the previous month. Same-day visitors surged 20.4 percent, while overnight visitors fell by 2.3 percent. Visitors from China rose 5.7 percent, with those traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme rising 1.0 percent. Also, visitors grew from Hong Kong (27.2 percent), Taiwan (6.4 percent), the Philippines (48.4 percent), and Indonesia (2.9 percent), but declined from India (-33.4 percent), Japan (-15.7 percent), Malaysia (-11.5 percent), and the US (-9.5 percent). Considering the first nine months 2019, visitor arrivals soared 17 percent year-on-year to 30.20 million.

The annual inflation rate in Macau dropped to 2.73 percent in September 2019 from 2.83 percent in the previous month. Inflation eased for: housing & utilities (1.20 percent vs 1.33 percent in August); transport (4.22 percent vs 5.06 percent); household goods & furnishings (1.66 percent vs 2.34 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (3.21 percent vs 3.54 percent); recreation & culture (1.21 percent vs 1.65 percent), and education (5.25 percent vs 5.83 percent). In addition, prices fell faster for clothing & footwear (-0.43 percent vs -0.08 percent); communication (-2.56 percent vs -2.53 percent). Meanwhile, inflation accelerated for both food & non-alcoholic beverages (4.41 percent vs 4.00 percent) and health (4.17 percent vs 3.91 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.20 percent in September, after a 0.30 percent gain in August.

Year-on-year, exports fell 8.8 percent to MOP 0.93 billion, mainly dragged by re-exports (-11.9%), with that of machines, apparatus & parts and diamond & diamond jewelry tumbled by 41.6% and 34.7%, respectively. Sales dropped to China (-27.6%), Hong Kong (-13.1 percent), but surged to the US (637.1%), the EU (38.1 percent). Meanwhile, imports dropped at a softer 0.60 percent to MOP 7.50 billion, weighed down by food & beverages (-1.3%), garment & footwear (-4.6%), and gold jewelry (-26.1%). Purchases dropped from Hong Kong (-29%) and Japan US (-18.1%), but rose from the EU (0.9%). Considering the first eight months of 2019, exports grew 3.0 percent from a year earlier to MOP 8.37 billion, while imports fell 2.5 percent to MOP 56.67 billion, bringing a trade gap of MOP 48.30 billion.

It remained the highest jobless rate since August-October 2018 period, with total number of unemployed edging up by 1 hundred to 7.1 thousand and employment rising 2 hundred to 387.3 thousand. Job gains were seen in gaming & junket activities, wholesale & retail trade, and restaurant & similar activities, while losses were reported in hotels & similar activities, and construction. Meantime, the labor force participation rate was unchanged at 70.3 percent. In June-August 2018, the jobless rate was also at 1.8 percent.

Macau Interest Rate at 2.25 percent  
The Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) lowered its key interest rate by 25 basis point to 2.25 percent at its September meeting, following its Hong Kong counterpart's move, after the US Federal Reserve cut interest rates by the same margin. This was the second rate cut this year. As the pataca is linked to the Hong Kong dollar, the movements of policy rates in Hong Kong and Macao should be basically consistent in order to maintain the effective operation of the linked exchange rate system. The Hong Kong dollar is linked to the US dollar under a similar linked exchange rate system.

Macau GDP Annual Growth Rate at -1.80 percent  
Macau's GDP shrank 1.8 percent year-on-year in Q2 2019, after a 3.2 percent contraction in the prior period. It was the second straight quarterly decline, as fixed investment continued to slid (-25% vs -31.7% in Q1), owing to a 30.1% fall in construction investment. Public investment in construction plunged 51.6%, as a result of the relatively high comparison basis due to the huge investment launched by the government in the same period last year in the completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Artificial Border Island. Also, private investment slid by 19.3% on lower investment in large-scale construction projects and a drop in number of new residential projects. Meantime, total exports fell (-0.3% vs -0.4%), dragged down by goods (-24.4%) and gaming services (-0.8%). Total imports also slumped (-4.6% vs -5.0%), namely goods (-0.8) and services (-13.7%). In contrast, private consumption (2.2% vs 2.1%) and government spending (5.7% vs 4.1%) advanced faster.

Retail sales in Macau dropped 0.5 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2019, following a downwardly revised 1.7 percent fall in the previous quarter. It was the second straight month decrease in retail sales, but the declines slowed as sales fell softer for both motor vehicles (-3.4 percent vs -22.9 percent in Q1) and adult's clothing (-11.1 percent vs -13.6 percent). In addition, sales rebounded for: communication (14.1 percent vs -14.0 percent); goods in pharmacies (3.0 percent vs -10.0 percent) while those rose faster for cosmetics & sanitary articles (3.4 percent vs 2.4 percent); goods in department stores (6.4 percent vs 6.0 percent), and goods in supermarkets (6.4 percent vs 6.0 percent). On the other hand, sales continued to drop for automotive fuels (-3.9 percent vs -3.3 percent); watches, clothes & jewelry (-4.9 percent vs -2.1 percent). Meanwhile, sales went up softer for leather goods (5.0 percent vs 7.7 percent).
