Macau Interest Rate at 1.50 percent  
The Central Bank of Macau has raised its base rate by 25 bps to 1.5 percent on June 15th, 2017, after the US Federal Reserve decided to hike the key rate by 25 bps to 1 percent-1.25 percent. Since the Macanese pataca is linked to the Hong Kong dollar and the Hong Kong dollar is linked to the US dollar, the movements of policy rates in Hong Kong and Macao should be basically consistent in order to maintain the effective operation of the linked exchange rate system.

Macau Inflation Rate at 0.95 percent  
Consumer prices in Macau rose 0.95 percent year-on-year in May of 2017, compared to a 0.80 percent increase in the prior month. It was the highest inflation rate since January, as prices went up at a faster pace for: food & non-alcoholic beverages (1.62 percent from 0.69 percent); education (7.46 percent from 7.42 percent), and health (5.14 percent from 3.51 percent) while clothing & footwear rebounded (0.12 percent from -0.68 percent). Prices rose at a slower pace for: recreation & culture (1.42 percent from 2.49 percent); household goods & furnishings (1.86 percent from 1.94 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (1.49 percent from 1.71 percent), and transport (2.44 percent from 3.64 percent). In contrast, prices of communication fell further (-5.79 percent from -5.57 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.28 percent, compared to a 0.10 percent rise in April.

Visitor arrivals in Macau rose 3.7 percent year-on-year to 2,570,428 in May of 2017, following a 11 percent growth in April. While overnight visitors went up by 14.2 percent, same-day visitors decreased by 6.1 percent. Visitors from China, that accounted for 66.2 percent of total visitors, went up 4.4 percent (from 7.1 percent in the prior month) with those traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme rising by 9.9 percent. Also, visitors increased from the Republic of Korea (50.1 percent); Japan (20.2 percent); Taiwan (9.5 percent); Canada (2.4 percent), and the United Kingdom (0.2 percent).

Macau GDP Annual Growth Rate at 10.30 percent  
Macau's economy advanced 10.3 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, following a 7 percent expansion in the previous period. It is the highest growth rate since the first quarter of 2014, boosted by both exports of services (13.4 percent vs 8.2 percent in Q4), namely tourism (20.9 percent vs 8.4 percent in Q4) and gaming services (11.3 percent vs 8.1 percent in Q4) and exports of goods (9.7 percent vs -21.2 percent in Q4). Meantime, imports of goods rose at a slower 5.2 percent (recovering from a 8 percent drop in Q4) while those of services increased further (6.9 percent vs 1.6 percent in Q4). Private consumption also recovered (1.6 percent vs -0.5 percent in Q4); government spending advanced 4.8 percent (after showing no growth in Q4) and gross fixed investment surged (4.6 percent vs 0.2 percent in Q4).
