Macau's trade deficit widened 21.2 percent year-on-year to MOP 6.20 billion in June of 2018 from a MOP 5.12 billion deficit a year earlier. It is the largest deficit since March, as exports rose less than imports. Exports rose 12.3 percent to MOP 1.06 billion, mainly boosted by re-exports (up 18.3 pct) while domestic sales fell 18.5 percent. Exports increased to the EU (111.1 pct) but declined to China (-12.2 pct) and the US (-45.4 pct). Imports surged 19.8 percent to MOP 7.26 billion, mainly boosted by purchases of mobile phones (83.1 pct); beauty, cosmetic & skin care products (37.8 pct), and watches (33.9 pct). Most imports came from China (up 23.3 pct) and the US (up 20.6 pct). In the first half of 2018, exports went up 10.2 percent year-on-year and imports grew 24.8 percent, widening the trade gap to MOP 37.25 billion.

It remained at its the lowest jobless rate since November 2017- January 2018 period, as total number of unemployed decreased by 300 to 6.9 thousand while employment went up by 2,300 to 385.4 thousand. Job gains were seen in gaming & junket activities and construction while losses were observed in wholesale & retail trade; restaurant & similar activities, and hotels & similar activities. Visitor arrivals in Macau increased 9.4 percent year-on-year to 2.603 million in June of 2018, following a 5.2 percent rise in May. Same-day visitors rose by 12.4 percent, while overnight visitors went up by 7.2 percent. Visitors from China, which accounted for 67.3 percent of total visitors, increased 13.5 percent with those traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme rose by 15 percent. Also, visitors increased from Hong Kong (2 percent), Taiwan (7.8 percent), Japan (9.8 percent), the USA (3.7 percent), the UK (4.4 percent), and France (3.8 percent). Considering the first half of 2018, visitor arrivals rose 8 percent year-on-year to 16.814 million.

Macau's consumer price inflation rose to 3.11 percent year-on-year in June of 2018 from 2.97 percent in the previous month. It is the highest inflation rate since February, as prices increased at a faster pace for: food & non-alcoholic beverages (2.57 pct vs 2.48 pct in May); housing & utilities (1.89 pct vs 1.86 pct); transport (6.30 pct vs 6.07 pct); clothing & footwear (8.43 pct vs 6.68 pct); recreation & culture (3.05 pct vs 2.87 pct); household goods & furnishings (2.85 pct vs 2.71 pct), and health (5.10 pct vs 4.90 pct). Meantime, prices went up less than in a month earlier for : miscellaneous goods & services (3.14 pct vs 3.54 pct) while inflation was steady for education (at 4.14 pct). By contrast, prices fell for both alcoholic beverages & tobacco (-0.21 pct vs 0.50 pct in May) and communication (-7.80 pct, the same pace as in May). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.36 percent.

Macau GDP Annual Growth Rate at 9.20 percent  
The economy of Macau advanced 9.2 percent year-on-year in the first three months of 2018, after an 8 percent expansion in the previous period. External demand rose further, with exports of services increasing 16 percent (from 15.7 percent in Q4) boosted by exports of gaming services (16.5 percent from 16.3 percent) and other tourism services (19.6 percent from 15.4 percent). In addition, private consumption expenditure surged 4.8 percent compared to a 2.7 percent growth in the previous quarter and investment fell less (-1.9 percent from -14.2 percent). On the other hand, government final consumption expenditure slowed (2.2 percent from 5.1 percent).

Meantime, sales increased less for cosmetics and sanitary articles ( 15.1 percent from 19 percent). In contrast, sales fell for goods in supermarkets (-1.5 percent from 4.2 percent).
