Baltic Dry Index Up for 2nd Day

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, was up for a second session on Friday, rising about 0.3% to 3,148 points, buoyed by the bigger-size segment.

The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes, including iron ore and coal, also increased for the second session, advancing 0.6% to 5,042 points.

On the other hand, the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell by 0.3% to 2,372 points; and the supramax index decreased by 0.3% to 1,789 points.

For the week, the benchmark index logged a 8.1% decline.

Baltic Dry index at Over 1-Month Low
The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, retreated for a fourth straight session on Wednesday, slumping about 2.1% to its lowest since August 27 at 3,113 points. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes, including iron ore and coal, fell further, dropping by 3.4% to its lowest since August 25 at 4,928 points; and the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, decreased by 0.3% to 2,384 points. Among smaller vessels, the supramax index remained unchanged at 1,797 points, its highest since August 2022. The benchmark index posted a monthly decline of 1.4%, but recorded a quarterly gain of 24.5%.

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, decreased for a third straight session on Tuesday, dropping about 2.8% to a fresh low since September 1 at 3,178 points. The main downward pressure came from larger vessel segments. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes, including iron ore and coal, slipped by 4.6% to its lowest since August 26 at 5,103 points; and the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell 0.5% to 2,390 points. On the other hand, the supramax index rose by 0.4% to its highest since August 2022 at 1,797 points.
