Austria Wholesale Prices Hit 3-Year High

Wholesale prices in Austria rose by 5.4% year-on-year in March 2026, accelerating from 1.1% in the previous month.

This marked the sharpest increase in wholesale prices since February 2023, driven primarily by higher energy costs, with other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products up 35.6% and motor spirits rising 27.2%.

Other notable gains were seen in watches and jewelry (+15.7%), coffee, tea, cocoa and spices (+12.6%), information and communication equipment (+11.3%), and waste and scrap (+10.1%), alongside non-iron metals (+9.7%), machinery (+8.3%), flat glass (+8.0%), flowers and plants (+7.6%), and wood products (+6.9%).

On the downside, prices fell for grain, seeds and animal feed (-14.9%), plastics and rubber in primary forms (-3.5%), hides and leather (-3.4%), stationery (-2.7%), and radio, television, and recording and reproduction equipment (-1.6%).

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices jumped 3.9% in March, up from 0.7% in each of the previous two months.

Other notable contributors included other machinery and equipment (+9.1%), fruits and vegetables (+8.3%), flat glass (+8%), solid fuels (+7.5%), and wood in the rough; products of primary processing of wood (+7%). On the other hand, prices decreased in grains, seeds, and animal feeds (-14.4%), plastics and rubber in primary forms (-12.1%), other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products (-8.1%), motor spirits (-6.5%), and hides and leather (-5.1%). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices stood at 0.7% in February, matching the pace of the preceding period.

Austria Wholesale Prices Rise Faster in January
Wholesale prices in Austria increased by 0.4% year-on-year in January 2026, accelerating from a 0.1% gain in the previous month. Significant price increases were seen for coffee, tea, cocoa and spices (+14.7%), watches and jewellery (+13.4%), as well as waste and scrap (+13.3%). Other notable contributors included other machinery and equipment (+9.8%), flat glass (+6.9%), sugar, chocolate and sugar confectionery (+6.5%) and wood in the rough; products of primary processing of wood (+6.4%). On the other hand, wholesale prices fell sharply for other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products (-13.2%), grain, seeds and animal feeds (-13.1%), motor spirit (-9.0%), plastics and rubber in primary forms (-8.9%) as well as hides and leather (-5.0%). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices rose by 0.7% in January, recovering from a 0.7% decline in the preceding period.
