The seasonally adjusted Stanbic Bank Uganda PMI came in at 53.5 in April 2017, unchanged from March 5-month high. Ugandan private sector output and new orders both expanded for the third successive month, due to robust demand from the domestic market while new export business continued to contract. Also, employment grew further, leading to inflation of average wages and salaries. On the price front, average purchasing costs and output charges rose.

Uganda GDP Annual Growth Rate at 1.40 percent  
The GDP in Uganda expanded 1.4 percent year-on-year in the last three months of 2016, slowing from a 2 percent rise in the previous quarter. It is the lowest growth rate in four years due to a 6.6 percent slump in agriculture, namely a decline in food and cash crops. In addition, the services sector expanded at a slower 2.8 percent (3.4 percent in the previous period) while industrial output rose at a faster 3.5 percent (3.2 percent in the previous period). On a quarterly basis, the GDP advanced 0.8 percent, recovering from a 0.1 percent drop in the previous period. The economy is expected to expand 5.5 percent in the 2017/2018 fiscal year, boosted by public spending on infrastructure projects, namely transport and electricity, according to IMF figures. Yet, Uganda's budget will increase by 17.7 percent in the financial year starting in July, with the biggest beneficiary being the transport sector, government figures showed.

Producer prices in Uganda rose 3 percent year-on-year in January of 2017, higher than a 2.4 percent rise in the previous month. Manufacturing cost increased at a faster pace for food products (5.4 percent from 4.6 percent in December); metal and related products (5.3 percent from 1.9 percent) and textile, clothing and footwear (0.6 percent from 0.1 percent). In contrast, prices increased slightly less for chemicals, paint, soap and foam (12.7 percent from 12.8 percent). Meanwhile, prices continued to decline for drinks and tobacco (-5.6 percent from -5.3 percent); brick and cement (-1 percent, the same as in December) and miscellaneous products (-3.2 percent from -3.1 percent). On a monthly basis, factory gate prices went up 0.5 percent compared to 0.3 percent fall in a month earlier.
