The Stanbic Bank Uganda PMI rose to 54.7 in April 2019 from 51.7 in the prior month and marking the highest reading since January. Still, it signalled the 27th straight month of expansion in the country's private sector, as both output and new orders continued to rise. At the same time, employment growth was sustained. In contrast, export orders decreased amid issues on the border with Rwanda. Meantime, the purchasing activity increased for 14th straight month, which helped to raise inventories following the decline in March. In terms of prices, overall input costs rose, with panellists reporting increases in electricity and water bills, alongside further rises in both purchase prices and staff costs. Accordingly, companies raised their output prices. The business sentiment was positive.

Uganda GDP Annual Growth Rate at 6.60 percent  
The economy of Uganda advanced 6.6% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2018, after a downwardly revised 6.2% growth in the previous period. It is the fastest expansion since Q1 2018, mainly driven by services (8.4% vs 8.0% in Q3), namely administrative & support service (16.5% vs 12.5%); finance & insurance (14.6% vs 6.1%); arts, entertainment & recreation (12.9% vs 14.6%) and heath & social work (11.4% vs 11.6%). Also, output quickened in the agricultural sector (4.5% vs 3.1%), boosted by fishing (13.3% vs 10.5%); forestry (7.8% vs 2.2%); cash crops (6.4% vs 4.2%) and food crops (3.6% vs 3.2%). Conversely, the industrial sector lost steam (3.5% vs 6.5%), as output slowed in construction (4.2% vs 9.3%) and it plunged in mining (-8.5% vs 7.5%). On a quarterly basis, the economy grew 1.2 percent, after expanding 2.2 percent in the third quarter.

Uganda Interest Rate at 10.00 percent  
The Bank of Uganda held its benchmark lending rate for the third consecutive time at 10% on April 1st, saying economic activity is close to its potential of 6-6.5%. The country's annual core inflation jumped to 4.6 percent in March, its highest level since June 2017 and close to the central bank's midpoint target of 5 percent. The inflation outlook in the short-term is unchanged compared to the February 2019 forecast although risks remain elevated. However, inflation in the medium-term is projected slightly higher: annual headline inflation and core inflation are now forecast to reach 6.3% and 6.4% in Q3 2021.
