Serbia Current Account Deficit Doubles in July

Serbia’s current account deficit widened sharply to $540 million in July 2026, doubling from a $265 million deficit in the same month a year earlier. The services account swung to a deficit of $80 million from a surplus of $99 million, while the primary income deficit widened to $635 million from $400 million. In contrast, the goods deficit narrowed to $541 million from $607 million, while the secondary income surplus widened to $715 million from $644 million. Over the first seven months of 2026, Serbia posted a current account deficit of $2,199 million, narrowing from $2,396 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Serbia’s current account deficit widened sharply to $1,022 million in June 2026 from $231 million in the same month last year. This marked the largest deficit since December 2025, as the goods account deficit increased to $687 million from $326 million, while the services surplus narrowed to $225 million from $297 million. At the same time, the primary income deficit expanded to $1,118 million from $690 million. On the other hand, the secondary income surplus rose to $557 million from $488 million. Over the first half of the year, Serbia posted a current account deficit of $1,616 million, smaller than the $2,204 million recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Serbia recorded a current account deficit of USD 145 million in May 2026, narrowing from USD 527 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. It was the smallest deficit since October last year, driven largely by a bigger surplus for services account, which rose to USD 314 million from USD 161 million. At the same, the goods account shortfall contracted to USD 549 million from USD 571 million. The primary income account gap also fell to USD 485 million from USD 636 million, while the secondary income account surplus expanded to USD 575 million from USD 518 million. Considering the first five months of the year, the country’s current account deficit declined to USD 655 million from USD 1,973 million in the same period a year earlier.
