Paraguay Trade Balance Swings to Deficit

Paraguay’s trade balance swung to a deficit of $50.84 million in August 2026, from a $25.12 million surplus a year earlier. Imports surged 21.1% year over year to $1.85 billion. Purchases of consumer goods grew 13.1%, imports of intermediate goods rose 23%, and capital goods purchases increased 24.9%. Meanwhile, exports increased 15.9% to $1.80 billion. Sales of manufactured goods of agricultural and livestock origin rose 8.6%, while exports of industrial manufactured goods jumped 23.6% and sales of fuels and energy increased 13.9%. In contrast, exports of primary products fell 2.1%.

Paraguay's trade deficit widened to $95.98 million in July 2026 from $89.07 million a year earlier, as imports grew faster than exports. Imports surged 30.6% year-on-year to $2.04 billion, led by increases in purchases of intermediate goods (36.9%), capital goods (36.7%), and consumer goods (18.2%). Meanwhile, exports rose 32% to $1.94 billion. Sales of primary products increased 27.7%, while agricultural manufacturing exports rose 24.2% and industrial manufacturing exports jumped 40.9%.

Paraguay's trade balance rebounded to a $47.09 million surplus in June 2026 from a $160.11 million deficit in the same month a year earlier. Exports rose 25.1% year-on-year to $1.74 billion, driven mainly by higher shipments of soybeans, soybean oil, and beverages, alcoholic liquids, and vinegar. Imports increased 9.2% to $1.70 billion, with fuels and lubricants, automobiles, SUVs and pickup trucks, and electrical equipment contributing the most to the increase. As a result, Paraguay posted a trade surplus of $746.6 million in the first half of 2026, compared with a $373.8 million deficit in the same period a year earlier.
