Consumer prices in Nicaragua increased 4.95 percent year-on-year in August 2018, slowing from 5.17 percent in the previous month. It was the lowest inflation in four months, as prices advanced at a slower pace for food & beverages (4.47 percent vs 4.51 percent in August), clothing (2.30 vs 2.40 percent), health (5.22 percent vs 5.31 percent), utilities (7.12 percent vs 7.92 percent), transport (10.25 percent vs 10.94 percent) and liquor & tobacco (7.49 percent vs 7.98 percent). In contrast, prices increased at a faster rate for communications (5.31 percent vs 4.45 percent) and restaurants & hotels (4.44 percent vs 4.07 percent). In addition, prices declined for recreation & culture (-0.44 percent vs +3.33 percent). On a monthly basis, prices declined remained practically unchanged after a 0.08 percent decline in July.

Nicaragua GDP Annual Growth Rate at 2.30 percent  
Nicaragua's economy advanced 2.3 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018, slowing from a 4.3 percent rise in the previous period. It was the weakest expansion since the fourth quarter of 2009 (0.9%). Output rose less mainly in: manufacturing (2.7 percent vs 4.6 percent in Q4); internal trade (3.4 percent vs 5.8 percent); transport and communications (6.3 percent vs 6.8 percent); agriculture (5.1 percent vs 11.7 percent) and education (2.9 percent vs 6.3 percent). Moreover, contractions were seen in: livestock activities (-8.1 percent vs 0.2 percent); forestry and wood extraction (-0.7 percent vs 3.5 percent); mining and quarrying (-3.0 percent vs -18.3 percent) and construction (-8.9 percent vs 0.2 percent). On the other hand, growth picked up in fishing activities (54.0 percent vs 26.6 percent); hotels and restaurants (11.8 percent vs 7.2 percent) and remained solid in finance intermediation (5.8 percent vs 6.1 percent).
