Nicaragua’s annual inflation rate fell to 3.30 percent in January 2019 from 3.89 percent in the previous month. It was the lowest inflation rate since July 2017, as prices eased for food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.28 percent vs 2.38 percent in December); housing & utilities (5.70 percent vs 6.01 percent); transport (2.60 percent vs 5.02 percent); furniture & household equipment (2.86 percent vs 2.95 percent); recreation & culture (6.66 percent vs 6.95 percent); and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (7.66 percent vs 8.22 percent). On the other hand, cost rose further for clothing & footwear (2.26 percent vs 2.13 percent); communications (5.68 percent vs 4.80 percent); and miscellaneous goods & services (3.47 percent vs 3.37 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 0.3 percent, after increasing 0.6 percent in December.

The Nicaragua's economy contracted a sharp 4.8 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2018, following an upwardly revised 4.6 percent fall in the previous period.
