Moldova Trade Deficit Widens in May

Moldova’s trade deficit widened to USD 640.2 million in May 2026 from USD 597.4 million in the same month last year.

Exports rose 17.1% year-on-year to USD 301.8 million, supported by higher shipments to the EU (12.1%), CIS countries (13.0%), and other markets (31.3%).

Meanwhile, imports increased 10.1% to USD 942.0 million, driven by stronger purchases from CIS countries (45.0%), the EU (14.5%), and other countries (3.6%).

Over the first five months of the year, the country’s trade gap widened to USD 3,270.4 million from USD 2,928.1 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Moldova’s trade deficit widened to USD 733.0 million in March 2026 from USD 659.0 million in the same month last year. Year-on-year, exports increased by 15.3% to USD 344.8 million, supported by stronger shipments to EU countries (35.1%) and other regions (15.6%), although exports to CIS countries fell by 0.2%. Meanwhile, imports rose 12.5% to USD 1,077.8 million, driven by higher purchases from CIS countries (42.8%), EU countries (10.3%), and other countries (13.3%). Over the first three months of the year, the country’s trade gap widened to USD 1,880.3 million from USD 1,737.5 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Moldova's trade deficit widened to $634.4 million in February 2026 from $601.3 million a year earlier. Imports rose 11.7% year-over-year to $972.1 million, with purchases from EU countries up 13.8%, from CIS countries up 0.4%, and from other countries up 9.6%. Exports grew 25.5% to $337.7 million, with sales to CIS countries jumping 41.5%, to EU members rising 17.2%, and to the rest of the world surging 40.4%.
