On a monthly basis, producer prices rose 0.5 percent, after a 0.3 percent decrease in February.

Industrial production in Moldova rose 3.8 percent year-on-year in February of 2019, following an upwardly revised 0.4 percent increase in the previous month. It was the highest gain in industrial activity since August of 2018, as output rebounded sharply for manufacturing (3.4 percent from -2.6 percent in January) and mining & quarrying (59.3 percent from -17.7 percent). Meanwhile, production of electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply (2.2 percent from 9.5 percent) went up at a softer pace. On a monthly basis, industrial output advanced 5.2 percent, recovering from a 29.7 percent fall in January.

The annual inflation rate in Moldova picked up to 2.8 percent in March 2019 from 2.4 percent in the previous month. It is the highest inflation rate since August, as prices rose faster for food (3.8 percent vs 3.5 percent in February), mainly led by vegetables (35.1 percent vs 35.5 percent); meat (0.4 percent vs -0.3 percent) and milk and dairy products (2.0 percent vs 1.3 percent). Also,cost was higher for non-food products (3.7 percent vs 2.9 percent), of which fuels (4.9 percent vs 4.5 percent). In addition, cost rebounded for services (0.1 percent vs -0.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.5 percent, following a 0.4 percent gain in the prior month.

Moldova’s gross domestic product expanded by 3.9 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2018, following a 3.4 percent advance in the previous period. Main contributions to growth came from household consumption (+4.7 percent) and gross fixed capital formation (+3.6 percent). On the other hand, net trade contributed negatively to growth (-5.7 percent). On a quarterly basis, the economy grew 1.1 percent, easing from an upwardly revised 1.3 percent gain in the third quarter. Considering full 2018, the GDP expanded 4 percent, compared to a 4.7 percent rise in 2017.

The National Bank of Moldova left its base rate unchanged at 6.5 percent on March 14th 2019, keeping borrowing costs at its lowest level since December 2014. Annual inflation rate rose to a five-month high of 2.4 percent in February from 2.2 percent in January, as expected by the central bank. For the next two quarters inflation is projected to be lower due to favourable meteorological conditions which led to moderated food prices; in the last quarter of the year, policymakers expect inflation to pick up again and to be maintained through 2020 on the back of higher prices of oil and food prices in international markets. The overnight credit rate and the overnight deposit rate were also kept at 9.5 percent and 3.5 percent respectively.

Among young people (15-24 years), the jobless rate was recorded at 5.5 percent, compared to 11.8 percent in Q4 2017. In the third quarter, unemployment rate was lower at 2.2 percent.
