Moldova Trade Deficit Widens in January

Moldova’s trade deficit widened to USD 512.9 million in January 2026, up from USD 477.2 million in the same month last year, though exports outpaced imports, and recording the lowest trade gap since January 2025. Exports rose 27.8% year-on-year to USD 310.8 million, supported by stronger shipments to CIS countries (25.2%), the EU (35.1%), and other regions (15.6%). Meanwhile, imports rose 14.4% to USD 823.7 million, driven by higher purchases from the EU (20.6%) and other countries (11.2%), while imports from CIS countries fell sharply (-39.2%).

Moldova recorded a trade deficit of USD 583.3 million in November 2025, widening sharply from USD 478.4 million in the same month last year, as imports outpaced exports. Imports rose 20.3% year-on-year to USD 979.2 million, driven by higher purchases from the EU (up 28.0%), CIS countries (up 3.9%), and other regions (up 12.6%). Exports grew 18.0% to USD 395.9 million, supported by increased sales to CIS countries (up 13.4%), the EU (up 8.8%), and other countries (up 52.0%). For the January–November period, Moldova’s trade deficit expanded to USD 6,392.0 million, compared with USD 4,934.7 million in the same period last year.

Moldova posted a trade deficit of USD 586.3 million in October 2025, widening sharply from USD 461.1 million in the corresponding month last year, as imports rose more than exports. Imports rose by 25.7% year-on-year to USD 995.5 million, driven by increased purchases from EU countries (39.2%), while arrivals declined less for CIS countries (-8.3%). However, purchases decreased for other countries (13.1%). On the other hand, exports grew by 23.7% to USD 409.2 million, supported by higher sales to CIS countries (37.7%), while shipments moderated for EU countries (19%) and other countries (34.3%). Considering the January-October period, the country’s trade gap widened to USD 5,808.9 million from USD 4,456.3 million recorded in the same period of the previous year.
