Malta’s Q2 GDP Expands 4.5%

Malta’s economy expanded by 4.5% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, following an upwardly revised 4.2% growth in the previous quarter.

Domestic demand remained a key driver of growth, rising to 4.2% from 3.2% in Q1, lifted by increases in both government spending (2.5% vs. 1.8%) and consumer spending (1.7% vs. 1.4%).

In contrast, net trade contributed negatively to the economy, as imports increased by 4.7%, outpacing the 4.0% rise in exports, while investment activity weakened as gross fixed capital formation moderated to 1.1% from 1.9%.

On the production side, activity grew in services (4.3% vs. 4.1%), while growth in the industrial sector edged down to 0.3% from 0.4%, and agriculture and fishing recorded no growth after declining by 0.1%.

Malta’s economy expanded by 3.9% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, slowing notably from an upwardly revised 6.5% growth rate recorded in the previous quarter. The moderation was mainly driven by a weaker contribution from net trade, as exports increased by 5.6%, while imports rose by a slower 4.9%. Despite the slowdown, domestic demand remained a key driver of growth, contributing 3.6 percentage points to GDP, lifted by gains in both household consumption (3.8%) and government spending (8.5%). Moreover, investment activity strengthened as gross fixed capital formation increased by 3.6% in Q1.

Malta Q4 GDP Growth at Over 1-Year High
Malta’s economy expanded by 6.4% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2025, accelerating from an upwardly revised 3.8% growth in the previous quarter. This marked the strongest pace of expansion since Q2 2024, primarily driven by domestic demand, which contributed 3.2 percentage points to GDP, supported by increases in both household consumption (3.1%) and government spending (6.3%). External demand also supported economic growth, with exports of goods and services rising by 6.1%, outpacing a 3.9% increase in imports. Moreover, gross fixed capital formation increased by 0.7%.
