Lithuania Trade Deficit Narrows in July

Lithuania’s trade deficit narrowed to €643.8 million in July 2026 from €909.2 million in the same month last year, as exports rose much faster than imports. Exports increased 13.6% year-on-year to €3,353.6 million, mainly due to higher exports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation (62.2%), cereals (3.0%), and machinery and mechanical appliances and parts (18.3%). Imports rose 3.5% to €3,997.3 million, amid increased imports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation (17.1%), electrical machinery and equipment and parts (8.8%), and organic chemicals (53.1%). For the January-July period, Lithuania’s trade deficit widened slightly to €4,198.6 million from €4,148.3 million a year ago. During this period, Lithuania’s goods were primarily exported to Latvia, which accounted for 13.4% of total exports, followed by Poland (12.2%) and Germany (9.1%). Imports were sourced predominantly from Poland (13.8%), Germany (12.7%), and Latvia (8.4%).

Lithuania posted a trade deficit of EUR 713.1 million in June 2026, widening from EUR 404.0 million in the corresponding month a year earlier. Exports increased 18.5% year-on-year to EUR 3,546.5 million, driven by higher shipments of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation (52.5%), plastics and articles thereof (19.2%), and iron and steel (2.4%). Meanwhile, imports climbed 25.4% to EUR 4,259.6 million, mainly reflecting stronger purchases of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation (2.1%), ground vehicles and parts thereof (20.3%), and electrical machinery, equipment and parts thereof (23.9%). Over the first six months of the year, the country's trade deficit widened to EUR 3,526 million from EUR 3,239 million, as imports (6.0%) continued to outpace exports (5.5%). Exports increased to Latvia (13.9%), Poland (26.2%), and the Netherlands (14.5%), while imports also rose from Poland (6.0%), Germany (2.5%), Latvia (9.0%), and Norway (90.9%).

Lithuania posted a trade deficit of EUR 855.2 million in May 2026, widening from EUR 615.5 million in the same month last year, still remaining as the largest trade shortfall since July 2025. Exports edged up by 1.4% year-on-year to EUR 3,113.8 million, mainly due to increased exports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and their distillation products (59.7%), land vehicles, their parts (7.7%), tobacco and processed tobacco substitutes (20.7%). Meanwhile, imports grew 7.7% to EUR 3,969.0 million due to increased imports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and their distillation products (68.3%), organic chemical products (69.0%), plastics and articles thereof (19.0%). In the January-May period, the country’s trade deficit narrowed slightly to EUR 2,813.1 million from EUR 2,835.1 million in the same period a year ago, as exports (3.0%) rose faster than imports (2.4%).
