Ecuador Trade Surplus Narrows Sharply in June

Ecuador’s trade surplus narrowed to $21.29 million in June 2026 from $564 million a year earlier.

Exports declined 1.34% year-on-year to $3.28 billion, as non-oil exports fell 2.87%.

Sales of traditional products declined 10.5%, led by cocoa and cocoa products (-49.7%), coffee and coffee products (-10.9%), tuna and fish (-21.4%), and bananas and plantains (-1%).

In contrast, imports grew 18% to $3.26 billion.

Purchases of consumer goods increased 13%, driven by a 43.3% rise in durable goods and a 4.6% increase in non-durable goods.

Imports of fuels and lubricants rose 37.3%.

Imports of raw materials increased 12.2%, led by industrial materials (+17.4%) and construction materials (+8.3%).

Imports of capital goods rose 11.3%, with transport equipment up 16.2%, agricultural goods up 13.5% and industrial goods up 9%.

Ecuador recorded a $2.34 billion trade surplus in the first half of 2026, down 44% from the same period of 2025.

Ecuador Trade Surplus Narrows in May
Ecuador's trade surplus narrowed to $450.43 million in May 2026 from a surplus of $498.39 million in the same month a year earlier. Imports increased 16.2% to $3,248 million, driven by higher purchases of fuels and lubricants (63%) and capital goods (16%), namely industrial goods (17%). Meanwhile, exports rose at a slower pace of 12.3% to $3,698 million, supported by higher oil exports (76%) and higher shipments of crude oil (76%), with additional support from non-traditional goods by 6%, mainly tobacco (45%).

Ecuador Trade Balance Swings to Deficit in April
Ecuador's trade balance swung to a deficit of $283.9 million in April 2026 from a surplus of $382.2 million in the same month a year earlier. Imports surged 38.8% year-on-year to $3.48 billion, driven by a 127.9% jump in purchases of fuels and lubricants. Imports of raw materials rose 19.1%, while those of consumer goods and capital goods increased 15.2% and 16.3%, respectively. Meanwhile, exports rose 10.6% to $3.19 billion. Shipments of primary products increased 13.0%, while exports of industrialized goods edged down 0.2%.
