The consumer price index in Croatia increased 1.2 percent year-on-year in December of 2017, down from a 1.4 percent gain in the previous month. It was the lowest inflation rate since August last year. Prices slowed primarily for food and non-alcoholic beverages (2.2 percent vs 2.8 percent in November) and transport (2.1 percent vs 2.8 percent). Also, cost rose less for miscellaneous goods and services (0.2 percent vs 0.3 percent) and recreation and culture (0.5 percent vs 0.8 percent) while fell for housing and utilities (-0.1 percent vs -0.7 percent) and communication (-0.7 percent vs -0.6 percent). Conversely, prices advanced further for clothing and footwear (2.4 percent vs 0.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 0.3 percent, after being flat in November.

It is the biggest expansion in three quarters, driven by robust household consumption (3.7 percent, the same as in the previous period) and rising government expenditure (2.3 percent from 1.7 percent) and investment (3.4 percent from 3.3 percent). On the other hand, exports rose at a slower 5.7 percent (from 6.5 percent) and imports advanced 9.5 percent (from 5.8 percent). On a seasonally adjusted basis, the economy grew 0.9 percent.
