Austria Wholesale Prices Fall at Softer Pace

Wholesale prices in Austria fell by 0.5% year-on-year in May 2025, following a 1% decrease in the previous month.

Still, this marked the fourth consecutive month of decline in wholesale prices, driven by lower prices for liquid & gaseous fuels & related products (-14%), solid fuels (-10.9%), and motor spirit (-9.4%).

Prices also declined for plastics & rubber in primary forms (-8.8%), waste & scrap (-6.9%), industrial chemicals (-5.2%), hardware, plumbing, & heating equipment & supplies (-2.9%), and information & communication equipment (-2.3%).

Meanwhile, costs rose sharply for coffee, tea, cocoa, & spices (+24.4%), watches & jewelry (+21%), live animals (+13.3%), and non-alcoholic beverages (+9.8%).

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices dropped by 0.3% in May 2025, easing from a 0.4% fall in the preceding month.

Austria Wholesale Prices Rise Further
Wholesale prices in Austria increased by 6.7% year-on-year in April 2026, accelerating from a 5.4% rise in the previous month. This marked the highest reading since February 2023, as the war in the Middle East drove a sharp increase in energy costs. Prices rose sharply for other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products (54.8%), plastics and rubber in primary forms (39.4%), and motor spirit (32.3%). Additional upward pressure came from higher prices for watches and jewelry (14.5%), non-iron metals (13.8%), information and communication equipment (13.6%), and waste and scrap (10.5%). Prices also increased for flowers and plants (9.8%), coffee, tea, cocoa and spices (9.6%), other machinery and equipment (9.5%), iron and steel (8.3%), solid fuels (8.1%), and flat glass (8.0%). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices rose by 1.1%, easing from a 3.9% increase in March.

Wholesale prices in Austria rose by 5.4% year-on-year in March 2026, accelerating from 1.1% in the previous month. This marked the sharpest increase in wholesale prices since February 2023, driven primarily by higher energy costs, with other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products up 35.6% and motor spirits rising 27.2%. Other notable gains were seen in watches and jewelry (+15.7%), coffee, tea, cocoa and spices (+12.6%), information and communication equipment (+11.3%), and waste and scrap (+10.1%), alongside non-iron metals (+9.7%), machinery (+8.3%), flat glass (+8.0%), flowers and plants (+7.6%), and wood products (+6.9%). On the downside, prices fell for grain, seeds and animal feed (-14.9%), plastics and rubber in primary forms (-3.5%), hides and leather (-3.4%), stationery (-2.7%), and radio, television, and recording and reproduction equipment (-1.6%). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices jumped 3.9% in March, up from 0.7% in each of the previous two months.

Wholesale prices in Austria rose by 1.1% year-on-year in February 2026 from 0.4% in the previous month. This marked the sharpest increase in wholesale prices since September 2025, driven largely by higher costs for watches and jewelry (+16.1%), coffee, tea, cocoa, and spices (+12.5%), waste and scrap (+12.1%). Other notable contributors included other machinery and equipment (+9.1%), fruits and vegetables (+8.3%), flat glass (+8%), solid fuels (+7.5%), and wood in the rough; products of primary processing of wood (+7%). On the other hand, prices decreased in grains, seeds, and animal feeds (-14.4%), plastics and rubber in primary forms (-12.1%), other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products (-8.1%), motor spirits (-6.5%), and hides and leather (-5.1%). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices stood at 0.7% in February, matching the pace of the preceding period.
