Private investment in Thailand surged 21.6% year-on-year in September 2026, accelerating sharply from 2.2% in the previous month.

This marked the strongest expansion since October 2012, largely driven by increased investment on machinery and equipment, reflecting higher imports of automatic data processing machines and digital processing units amid growing investment in AI and data centers.

Investment in vehicles also strengthened, supported by higher registrations of passenger cars and motorcycles.

In contrast, construction investment declined, weighed down by weaker residential building activity, particularly single-detached houses and townhouses.

Meanwhile, non-residential construction remained broadly stable.

Thailand Private Investment Rebounds in August
Private investment in Thailand increased 2.2% month-on-month in August 2026, rebounding from a 0.3% decline in the previous month. The increase was supported by higher domestic purchases of electrical machinery and medical equipment, alongside increased imports of capital goods, particularly computers and office equipment. Vehicle investment also picked up, helped by higher passenger car registrations and aircraft imports, although pickup truck registrations fell. In contrast, construction investment edged lower, mainly due to weaker non-residential activity, including factory construction in industrial estates and commercial buildings, while residential construction was broadly stable.

Thailand Private Investment Slips in July
Private investment in Thailand slipped 0.3% month-on-month in July 2026, reversing a 0.5% rise in the previous month. It marked the first monthly decline since April, driven mainly by weaker investment in machinery and equipment, reflecting lower imports of capital goods, particularly telecommunications and electrical equipment and specialized machinery. On the other hand, construction investment was broadly unchanged, as weaker residential construction, particularly apartments and dormitories, offset stable activity in the non-residential segment. Within non-residential construction, increased factory building helped offset weaker commercial construction. Investment in the vehicle category also rose, supported by higher passenger car registrations. However, registrations of other vehicle types declined, while imports of aircraft and ships also fell from the previous month.
