The Central Bank of Iceland left its key policy rate unchanged at 8% in October 2026, pausing its monetary tightening after three consecutive 25bp hikes.
Headline inflation continued to accelerate following the previous meeting, as antecipated, reaching a two-year high of 5.9% in September, driven mainly by the impact of the conflict in the Middle East and higher public levies.
Underlying inflation, however, has held relatively flat, at just over 4%.
Policymakers also noted that economic activity has begun to slow, contracting 1.1% in Q2 after expanding 2.8% in the previous quarter.
Nevertheless, the central bank expects inflation to decline relatively rapidly in 2027, although uncertainty remains high around global economic conditions and the domestic labor market.
Future rate decisions will continue to depend on developments in economic activity, inflation and inflation expectations, which remain elevated.
