Hungary Jobless Rate Rises to 4.7% in January-March

The unemployment rate in Hungary rose to 4.7% in January-March 2026 from 4.3% the corresponding period a year ago.

The number of unemployed individuals increased by 13.6 thousand year-on-year to 226.4 thousand.

Of the total unemployed, 121.9 thousand were men, with an unemployment rate of 4.7%, while 104.5 thousand were women, at 4.6%.

Moreover, the average time spent looking for a job was 12.2 months, with 35.3% of unemployed having been looking for a job for less than 3 months, while 28.4% for those looking for work for 4-11 months, while the proportion of those looking for work for more than a year remained unchanged at 36.3%.

Meanwhile, the number of employed persons decreased by 65 thousand to 4.627 million in the same period of the previous year.

Employment among men decreased by 36 thousand, to 2.457 million, while employment among women fell by 29 thousand to 2.170 million.

The unemployment rate in Hungary stood at 4.3% in the period from March to May 2026, unchanged from the corresponding period in the previous year. The number of unemployed individuals declined by 3.5 thousand from a year earlier to 208 thousand. Of the total unemployed, 109 thousand were men, with an unemployment rate of 4.2%, while 99 thousand were women, at 4.4%. Moreover, the average time spent looking for a job was 13.3 months. Among unemployed individuals, 31.7% had been seeking work for less than three months, while 31.4% had been looking for work for 4–11 months. The proportion of those searching for work for more than a year increased by 3.7 percentage points to 36.9%. Meanwhile, the number of employed persons decreased by 33 thousand year-on-year to 4.640 million. Employment among men remained unchanged at 2.248 million, while employment among women decreased by 34 thousand to 2.161 million.

The unemployment rate in Hungary edged up to 4.5% in February–April 2026 from 4.4% in the corresponding period a year ago. The number of unemployed individuals rose by 1.9 thousand year-on-year to 226.4 thousand. Of the total unemployed, 116.1 thousand were men, with an unemployment rate of 4.5%, while 102.5 thousand were women, at 4.5%. Moreover, the average time spent looking for a job was 13.1 months. Among unemployed individuals, 33.3% had been seeking work for less than three months, while 30.6% had been looking for work for 4–11 months. The proportion of those searching for work for more than a year increased by 2.4 percentage points to 36.1%. Meanwhile, the number of employed persons decreased by 55 thousand year-on-year to 4.618 million. Employment among men fell by 18 thousand to 2.464 million, while employment among women declined by 36.9 thousand to 2.154 million.
