Hungary Trade Surplus Shrinks in April

Hungary’s trade surplus narrowed sharply to EUR 104 million in April 2026 from EUR 1,149 million in the corresponding month a year ago.

Imports jumped 16% year-on-year to EUR 13,074 million, driven by higher purchases of machinery and transport equipment and processed products.

Meanwhile, exports rose 6.4% to EUR 13,117 million in April, lifted by slowed declines in food, beverages, and tobacco, though partly offset by weaker exports of processed products, and machinery and transport equipment.

For the first four months of the year, the country’s trade surplus fell to EUR 2,674 million from 4,620 million in the same period last year.

Hungary’s trade surplus narrowed to EUR 924 million in March 2026 from EUR 1,697 million in the corresponding month a year ago, while surpassing market forecasts of EUR 665 million, as exports rose less than imports. Exports grew 3.6% year-on-year to EUR 14,045 million in March, driven by increased shipments of food, beverages, and tobacco, though partly offset by weaker exports of machinery and transport equipment and manufactured goods. Meanwhile, imports climbed 11% to EUR 13,121 million, supported by higher purchases of machinery and transport equipment and manufactured goods. For the first three months of the year, the country’s trade surplus fell to EUR 2,209 million from EUR 3,472 million in the same period last year.

Hungary’s trade surplus narrowed to EUR 665 million in February 2026 from EUR 1,006 million in the corresponding month a year ago, as exports rose less than imports. Still, it was the largest trade surplus since June 2025. Exports grew 2.6% year-on-year to EUR 12,695 million in February, driven by increased shipments of machinery and transport equipment, though partly offset by weaker exports of manufactured goods. Meanwhile, imports climbed 5.9% to EUR 12,030 million, supported by higher purchases of machinery and transport equipment. For the first two months of the year, the country’s trade surplus fell to EUR 957 million from EUR 1,775 million in the same period last year.
