Greek Credit Growth Slows to Lowest Pace in a Year

Total credit extended to the Greek economy increased by 5.5% year-on-year in December 2025 from 5.0% in the previous month. Credit to the private sector rose to 7.9% from 7.2% in November. The monthly net flow of financing to the private sector was positive, amounting to €3,876 million, compared with €1,303 million a month earlier. Moreover, credit to the general government edged up to 1.6% in December from 1.4% in November. The monthly net flow of financing to the general government was also positive at €756 million in December from €524 million in the prior month.

Total credit to the Greek economy increased 5.0% year-on-year to €203.05 billion in November 2025, down from a 5.4% rise in October, the slowest growth since November 2024. Credit to the private sector eased to a 7.2% gain, reaching €126.45 billion, compared with 7.8% in October. Meanwhile, lending to the general government rose 1.4% to €76.60 billion, slightly below the 1.5% increase recorded the previous month.

Total credit extended to the Greek economy grew by 5.4% year-on-year in October 2025, easing from a 7.8% increase in the previous month. This marked the lowest growth rate since December 2024, as credit to the private sector decreased to 7.8% from 10.7% in September. The monthly net flow of financing to the private sector turned negative, amounting to €1.38 billion, compared to a positive flow of €2.17 billion in the previous month. Moreover, credit to the general government went down to 1.5% in October, from 3.1% in September. In addition, the monthly net flow of financing to the general government was negative at €317 million in October, reversing a positive net flow of €695 million in the prior month.
