Greece Current Account Deficit Widens Sharply

Greece’s current account deficit widened sharply to €0.960 billion in May 2026 from €0.004 billion in the corresponding month a year earlier.

The primary income deficit expanded to €0.751 billion from €0.327 billion.

At the same time, the secondary income balance posted a deficit of €0.395 billion, compared with a surplus of €0.515 billion a year earlier, driven largely by a significant decrease in receipts from both the general government and other sectors.

Meanwhile, the goods account deficit narrowed to €2.115 billion from €2.362 billion as exports surged 21.2%, outpacing a 9.6% increase in imports.

The services account surplus also widened to €2.300 billion from €2.170 billion.

In the January–May period, the country recorded a current account deficit of €8.936 billion, up from €7.303 billion in the same period last year.

Greece Current Account Gap Narrows to 9-Month Low
Greece’s current account deficit narrowed sharply to €0.603 billion in June 2026 from €1.195 billion in the corresponding month a year earlier. This marked the lowest deficit since September 2025, as the goods account deficit shrank to €2.615 billion from €3.163 billion, with exports jumping 27.5%, outpacing a 7.3% rise in imports. At the same time, the primary income shortfall narrowed notably to €0.845 billion from €1.128 billion. In contrast, the services account surplus decreased to €3.242 billion from €3.366 billion, while the secondary account deficit widened to €0.386 billion from €0.270 billion. In the first half of 2026, the country recorded a current account deficit of €9.539 billion, up from €8.498 billion in the same period last year.

Greece Current Account Deficit Shrinks in April
Greece’s current account deficit narrowed to €1.39 billion in April 2026 from €2.35 billion in the corresponding month a year earlier. The goods account deficit decreased to €2.33 billion from €2.88 billion, as exports surged 36.3% while imports rose at a slower 12.2% pace. The secondary income account also improved, recording a surplus of €0.15 billion compared with a deficit of €0.23 billion in April 2025, supported by higher receipts from the general government sector. The primary income balance likewise improved to a surplus of €0.12 billion from a deficit of €0.32 billion a year earlier. However, these gains were partly offset by a slight easing in the services surplus, which edged down to €0.91 billion from €0.95 billion. From January to April 2026 period, the country posted a current account deficit of €8.35 billion, compared with €7.30 billion in the same period last year.
