Greece Construction Output Shrinks for 1st Time in 4 Years

Construction output in Greece declined by 3.5% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, reversing a 23.6% growth in the previous quarter.

This marked the first contraction since the first quarter of 2021, dragged by lower output in civil engineering (-9.9% vs 38.7% in Q4) and specialized construction (-4% vs 11.7%).

At the same time, growth in building construction decelerated sharply (4.8% vs 18.9%).

On a quarterly basis, construction output plunged by 50.9% in the March quarter, marking a sharp reversal from a 52% expansion in the preceding period.

Greece Construction Output Rises in Q3
Construction output in Greece rose by 3.3% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2025, following a downwardly revised 5.6% increase in the previous quarter. This marked the second consecutive quarter of growth in construction activity, supported by a faster rise in the output of residential and non-residential building construction (9.8% vs 9.2% in Q2) and a rebound in specialised construction activities (6.6% vs -3.5%). On the other hand, construction output in civil engineering contracted by 6%, reversing from a 13% gain in the prior quarter. On a quarterly basis, construction activity fell by 2.3% in Q3, slipping from a downwardly revised 41.9% growth in the preceding period.

Construction output in Greece grew by 7.2% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2025, rebounding from an upwardly revised 3.8% decline in the previous quarter. Production rose for building construction (9.3% vs 4.6% in Q1), while output growth recovered sharply for civil engineering (17.6% vs -10.4%). In addition, contraction eased for specialized construction (-3.5% vs -4%). On a quarterly basis, construction output accelerated by 44% in the June quarter, rebounding from a 51% plunge in the preceding period.
