Meanwhile, exports went up at a much softer 13 percent to EUR 349.4 million, as sales to countries outside the EU rose 33.7 percent to EUR 239.5 million while shipments to EU countries declined 15.5 percent to EUR 110 million. Considering the January-July period, the trade deficit narrowed by 6.5 percent to EUR 2,419 million, as exports climbed 53.5 percent to EUR 2,771 million and imports rose 18.2 percent to EUR 5,189 million.

It was the weakest growth rate since the three months to March of 2017.

It was the highest inflation rate since September 2012, as prices advanced faster for food & non-alcoholic beverages (3.4 percent from 2.4 percent in July); housing & utilities (6.5 percent from 5.7 percent) and restaurant & hotels (2.3 percent from 2.2 percent). Contrarily, prices slowed for transport (6.5 percent from 6.7 percent) and recreation & culture (1.2 percent from 1.5 percent); and dropped further for clothing & footwear (-1.9 percent from -0.5 percent); furniture & household equipment (-2.4 percent from -2.1 percent) and health (-0.5 percent from -0.1 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.7 percent, following a 1.2 percent fall in July.

Considering the first half of the year, retail trade advanced 7.6 percent, compared with the same period of 2017.
