Armenia current account gap increased 142.4 percent year-on-year to USD 338.3 million in the last quarter of 2017, compared to USD 139.6 million in the corresponding period a year earlier. It is the highest current account gap since the first quarter of 2014, as the goods and services gap widened to USD 744.8 million from USD 442.4 million. On the other hand, the primary income surplus went up to USD 222.9 million from USD 134.8 million, as well as the secondary income surplus (USD 183.6 million from USD 168.1 million). Considering full 2017, the country's current account gap went up to USD 399.9 million from USD 238.1 million in 2016.

Armenia Inflation Rate at 1.60 percent  
Inflation rate in Armenia slowed to 1.6 percent in May of 2018 from 2.4 percent in the previous month. It was the lowest inflation rate since October of 2017, as prices rose at a softer pace for transport (8.4 percent from 9.2 percent in April) and furniture & household equipment (1.6 percent from 1.7 percent). On the other hand, prices advanced faster for housing & utilities (0.4 percent from 0.3 percent); health (4.8 percent from 4.7 percent); recreation & culture (3.4 percent from 3.3 percent); clothing & footwear (7.5 percent from 7.3 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (3.7 percent from 3.3 percent) and restaurant & hotels (3.7 percent from 2.8 percent). Meanwhile, prices fell for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-0.5 percent from 1.5 percent) and inflation was unchanged for education (2.4 percent, the same as in April). On a monthly basis, consumer prices decreased 0.1 percent, after a 0.3 percent drop in April.

On the other hand, output advanced faster for wholesale & retail trade; repair of motor vehicles, motorcycles (15.5% from 11.3%); human health & social work activities (32.3% from 14.6%); mining & quarrying (21.2% from 11.2%); construction (13.4% from 12.4%) and professional, scientific & technical activities (20.1% from 10.5%). Meanwhile, output rebounded for real estate activities (9.9% from -0.9%) while production fell for electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply (-4.7% from 4%).

Armenia Interest Rate at 6.00 percent  
The Central Bank of Armenia (CBA) left its key refinancing rate steady at 6 percent for the tenth consecutive meeting in May of 2018. Policymakers said inflation is expected to remain low in the upcoming months. Also, economic activity has been strong in the first quarter of 2018, mostly due to growth in industry, construction and services and higher domestic demand although a gradual slowdown in domestic demand in the second quarter is expected. The Central Bank of Armenia reinforced it will maintain its current monetary conditions, as it is necessary to gradually neutralize monetary stimulus in the mid-term to bring inflation back to target of around 4 percent.
