Zambia Composite PMI at 50.70  
The Stanbic Bank Zambia PMI decreased to 50.7 in January of 2018 from 52.9 in the previous month. The reading pointed to the weakest expansion in private sector activity since the economy started to grow in May last year as output contracted for the first time in eight months due to recent cholera outbreak. Also, purchasing activity remained weak and inventories were left unchanged. On the positive note, employment accelerated to a four-month high and new orders rose at solid pace, despite easing for the second straight month. On the price front, overall inflationary pressures intensified, as a depreciation of kwacha against the US dollar led to higher prices of some inputs. Meanwhile, firms left their average selling prices unchanged.
