Vietnam Manufacturing PMI at 51.50  
The Nikkei Vietnam Manufacturing PMI declined to a 10-month low of 51.5 in September of 2018 from 53.7 in a month earlier. Output growth slowed for the third consecutive month and at the weakest pace since March, new export orders rose at the softest pace in 16 months and employment grew at the slowest rate since August last year. In addition, buying activity advanced at the weakest pace in six months, and new order growth eased. On the price front, weaker cost inflation enabled firms to reduce their output prices, ending a one-year period of increases. Looking ahead, business confidence rebounded form a record low, amid optimism regarding output growth over the coming year.

The annual inflation rate in Vietnam came in at 3.98 percent year-on-year in September 2018, unchanged from previous month. Inflation slowed for both housing and construction materials (3.23 percent vs 3.73 percent in August) and transport (7.93 percent vs 8.67 percent). Meantime, prices rose faster for food (3.71 percent vs 3.56 percent); garment, footwear, hat (1.58 percent vs 1.53 percent), and household appliances and goods (1.32 percent from 1.25 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes volatile items, increased to 1.61 percent from 1.54 percent in August. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.59 percent, following a 0.45 percent rise in August.

Vietnam's industrial production increased by 9.1 percent from a year earlier in September of 2018, following a 13.4 percent gain in the previous month. It was the weakest growth in industrial output since May, as output advanced at a softer pace for: manufacturing (11.2 percent vs 16 percent in August); and electricity supply and distribution (5.1 percent vs 6.7 percent). In addition, mining and quarrying production fell by 2.7 percent, compared to a 2.4 percent rise in a month earlier. On the other hand, output of water supply and waste treatment rose 8.4 percent, following a 7.1 percent gain in August. Considering the first nine months of the year, industrial production went up 10.6 percent over the same period of the preceding year.

Vietnam's gross domestic product grew by 6.88 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2018, compared with a marginally revised 7.73 percent growth in the previous quarter. The growth was driven by services sector (6.87 percent from 6.90 percent in Q2), industry and construction (8.61 percent from 9.28 percent), and agriculture, forestry and fisheries (3.46 percent from 3.93 percent). Considering the first three quarters of this year, the economy expanded 6.98 percent compared to the same period of 2017, the fastest growth since 2011.

Tourist arrivals in Vietnam jumped 24.2 percent year-on-year to 1.21 million in September of 2018 from 976 thousand in the same month a year earlier. Visitors rose from Asia (28.4 percent), mainly from China (43.7 percent); South Korea (29.8 percent); Taiwan (25.5 percent); and Thailand (22.9 percent); European countries (10 percent) namely Russia (15 percent), French (8.4 percent); Germany (9 percent); Spain (17.7 percent), and Italy (5.7 percent); and America (10.8 percent), mostly from the US (9.9 percent). In contrast, arrivals from Australia fell by 2.4 percent. Considering January to September 2018, tourist arrivals surged 22.9 percent from the same period the prior year to 11.6 million.
