Vietnam Manufacturing PMI at 54.90  
The Nikkei Vietnam Manufacturing PMI declined to 54.9 in July of 2018 from a second highest on record of 55.7 in the previous month. Output and new orders slowed slightly while new export orders rose to a near-record high. Also, job creation and purchasing activity rose solidly. Confidence in the future was illustrated by efforts by firms to build inventory reserves in order to prepare for further production growth and further solid hiring. On the price front, input cost remained elevated, mainly due to raw material shortages and output price inflation increased with the rate almost unchanged from the one in June.

Retail sales in Vietnam increased 14.7 percent year-on-year in July of 2018, following a 13.9 percent rise in the prior month. It was the biggest gain in retail trade since March. Considering the January to July period, retail sales went up 11.1 percent over the same period of 2017. Sales went up for goods (11.7 percent), namely foodstuffs (12.6 percent); garment (12, 4 percent); appliances & home appliances (12.3 percent); cultural and educational items (10.3 percent) and means of transport (10.4 percent).

Vietnam Industrial Production at 14.30 percent  
Vietnam's industrial production increased by 14.3 percent from a year earlier in July of 2018, following a 12.3 percent gain in the previous month. It is the strongest growth in industrial output since January, as production expanded at a faster pace for electricity supply and distribution (12.2 percent from 10 percent in June); while picked up for manufacturing (16.6 percent from 5.5 percent); and rebounded for mining and quarrying output (2.8 percent from -3.6 percent). In addition, output continued to increase for water supply and waste treatment (7.6 percent from 8 percent). Considering the first seven months of the year, industrial production increased by 10.9 percent, after a 7.1 percent rise in the same period 2017.

Meantime, outbound shipments rose 10.2 percent from a year earlier to 19.50 USD billion, driven by higher sales of textile and garment (18.3 percent); phone and accessories (14 percent), and electronics, computer and components (10.2 percent). For the first seven months of the year, exports rose 15.3 percent from a year earlier to USD 133.69 billion and imports were up 10.2 percent to USD 130.63 billion, translating to a trade surplus of USD 3.06 billion.

Tourist arrivals in Vietnam went up by 14.7 percent year-on-year to 1.18 million in July of 2018 from 1.04 thousand in the same month a year earlier. Visitors rose from Asia (17.4 percent), mainly from China (22.8 percent) and South Korea (30.4 percent); European countries (5.4 percent), namely Germany (20.4 percent), Denmark (12.3 percent), Belgium (11.8 percent) and France (7.9 percent); and America (10.3 percent), mostly from the US (12.4 percent). Considering January to July 2018, tourist arrivals surged 25.4 percent from the same period the prior year to 9.08 million.

Consumer price inflation in Vietnam eased to 4.46 percent year-on-year in July 2018, below 4.67 percent in the previous month. Prices went up at a softer pace for: food (3.78 percent vs 4.67 percent in June). Meantime, prices rose faster for: housing and construction materials (4.23 percent vs 3.88 percent in June); transport (10.84 percent vs 9.72 percent); garment, footwear, hat (1.52 percent vs 1.44 percent), and household appliances and goods (1.18 percent from 1.17 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes volatile items, increased to 1.41 percent from 1.37 percent in June. On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged down 0.09 percent, following a 0.61 percent rise in June.
