Vietnam Manufacturing PMI at 53.40  
The Nikkei Manufacturing PMI in Vietnam rose to 53.4 in January of 2018 from 52.5 in a month earlier. The reading pointed to the strongest growth in factory activity since April 2017, as output expanded the most since September last year, employment growth was at 16-month high and buying activity went up at the fastest rate in 13 months. In addition, new orders increased the most in four months, new export orders continued to grow and confidence remained upbeat. Meantime, delivery times lengthened while the rate of input cost inflation was at one of the strongest in survey history. Output prices also increased at a faster pace as firms responded to rising input costs and higher demand.

Vietnam's consumer price inflation stood at 2.65 percent year-on-year in January 2018, little-changed from the previous month's 2.60 percent. Upward pressure came from: food (3.11 percent vs 3.12 percent in December); housing and construction materials (4.64 percent vs 4.67 percent); transport (3.94 percent vs 6.04 percent); household appliances and goods (1.05 percent vs 1.08 percent); and garment, footwear, hat (1.24 percent vs 1.14 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes volatile items, eased to 1.18 percent from 1.29 percent in December. On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.51 percent, following a 0.21 percent gain in December.

It was the weakest increase in retail trade since February 2017, as sales went up at a softer pace for goods (8.3 percent from 11.8 percent in December) and other services (9.9 percent from 10.6 percent). At the same time, sales of accommodation & food increased by 14.7 percent, little changed from the previous month's figure of a 14.6 percent rise. Meanwhile, sales of tourism grew by 39.3 percent, after a 8.0 percent gain in the prior month.

It was the strongest pace of expansion since the fourth quarter of 2007. Considering 2017 as a whole, the country's economic growth quickened to 6.81 percent from 6.21 percent in 2016, as output rose for services (7.44 percent vs 6.98 percent), industry and construction (8 percent vs 7.57 percent), and agriculture, forestry and fisheries (2.90 percent vs 1.36 percent). It was strongest annual growth rate since 2010.
