Uruguay CPI Picks Up in May

Uruguay’s annual inflation rate accelerated to 3.77% in May 2026 from 3.16% in April.

The increase was driven by higher prices for education (6.91%), restaurants and hotels (6.85%), healthcare (6.15%), housing and utilities (5.02%), and personal care and social protection (4.89%).

Transport costs rose 4.47%, while food and non-alcoholic beverage prices increased 2.21%.

In contrast, clothing and footwear prices fell 4.88% from a year earlier.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.70% in May, accelerating from a 0.54% increase in the previous month.

Uruguay Inflation Accelerates in April
Uruguay’s annual inflation rose to 3.2% in April 2026 from 2.9% in the previous month. The strongest price increases were seen in education (7.1%), restaurants and lodging (7.1%), personal care and social security (5.3%), utilities (4.5%), information and communication (3.7%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (3.4%), and insurance and financial services (3.2%), while prices fell for clothing and footwear (-4.7%). On a monthly basis, inflation picked up to 0.54% from 0.41% in March.

Uruguay Inflation Eases in March
Uruguay's annual inflation eased to 2.94% in March 2026 from 3.11% in February, the lowest rate since August 1956. Price increases slowed across most categories: food and non-alcoholic beverages fell to 2.43% from 4.32%, and housing and utilities declined to 3.99% from 5.01%. Deflation deepened in clothing and footwear to 4.33% from 3.86%, while transport deflation eased to 2.2% from 3.58%. Prices rose faster in information and communication at 3.76% from 3.53%, and recreation, sports and culture at 2.85% from 2.49%. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.41%, accelerating from 0.35% in February.
