Thailand Current Account Swings to Deficit

Thailand’s current account recorded a deficit of USD 1.6 billion in July 2026, shifting from a surplus of USD 1.1 billion in the corresponding month a year earlier.

The trade balance swung to a deficit of USD 0.1 billion from a surplus of USD 2.7 billion in July 2025, as imports rose to USD 34.4 billion from USD 25.4 billion, outpacing the increase in exports to USD 34.3 billion from USD 28.1 billion.

Meanwhile, the deficit in net services, primary income, and secondary income held steady at USD 1.5 billion.

On the financial account, the overall balance shifted to a deficit of USD 3.6 billion from a surplus of USD 3.5 billion, despite an increase in the general government surplus to USD 0.9 billion and that of other depository corporations to USD 6.7 billion from USD 3.5 billion.

The trade balance shifted into a USD 2.8 billion deficit from a USD 3.5 billion surplus, as imports surged to USD 37.7 billion from USD 24.9 billion, outpacing the increase in exports, which rose to USD 34.4 billion from USD 28.4 billion. In addition, the shortfall in net services, primary income, and secondary income widened to USD 0.8 billion in May from USD 0.3 billion a year earlier. On the financial account, the surplus narrowed to USD 0.6 billion from USD 1.1 billion in the same month last year, as the general government’s surplus eased to USD 1.2 billion from USD 1.3 billion, while other depository corporations swung to a USD 1.3 billion deficit from a USD 2 billion surplus a year earlier.

The trade deficit widened sharply to USD 6.8 billion from USD 1.1 billion in April 2025, as imports (USD 37.7 billion) continued to outpace exports (USD 30.9 billion). Meanwhile, the deficit in services, primary income, and secondary income increased to USD 0.8 billion from USD 0.2 billion a year earlier. On the financial account, the overall surplus fell to USD 2.3 billion in April 2026 from USD 3.4 billion in the same period last year, largely due to other depository corporations recording a deficit of USD 2.3 billion, compared with a surplus of USD 1.1 billion a year earlier.
