The annual inflation rate in Tanzania eased to 3.3% in January 2026 from 3.6% in December, marking the lowest reading since late July.
The slowdown was driven by moderating price growth in food and non-alcoholic beverages (5.7% vs 6.7% in December), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (2.2% vs 3.4%), and clothing and footwear (1.2% vs 2%).
Inflation also slowed for furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance (2.7% vs 3%), as well as education services (0.4% vs 2.9%).
Conversely, prices rose further for transport (4.2% vs 4.1%), restaurants and accommodation services (1.1% vs 0.9%), and personal care, social protection, and miscellaneous goods and services (3.2% vs 1.2%), while inflation remained unchanged for housing and utilities (2.3%).
On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased by 0.2%, following a 0.9% gain in December.
