Tanzania Inflation Rate Steady at 9-Month Low

The annual inflation rate in Tanzania stood at a nine-month low of 3.2% in March 2026, unchanged from the prior month.

Price growth remained unchanged for alcoholic beverages & tobacco (at 2.1%); recreation & culture (at 0.6%) and insurance and financial services ( at 0.3%).

Moreover, some CPI categories saw slower increases, namely food & non-alcoholic beverages (5.5% vs 5.7% in February); housing & utilities (1.6% vs 1.7%) and furnishings & household equipment (2.3% vs 2.5%).

On the other hand, prices accelerated for transportation (4.2% vs 4%); miscellaneous goods & services (3.3% vs 3.2%); restaurants & hotels (2.1% vs 1.7%); clothing & footwear (1.3% vs 1.1%) and health (1.1% vs 0.9%).

On a monthly basis, the CPI rose by 0.8%, after a 0.5% increase in the previous month.

Tanzania Inflation Rate Lowest in 6 Months
The annual inflation rate in Tanzania eased to 3.3% in January 2026 from 3.6% in December, marking the lowest reading since late July. The slowdown was driven by moderating price growth in food and non-alcoholic beverages (5.7% vs 6.7% in December), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (2.2% vs 3.4%), and clothing and footwear (1.2% vs 2%). Inflation also slowed for furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance (2.7% vs 3%), as well as education services (0.4% vs 2.9%). Conversely, prices rose further for transport (4.2% vs 4.1%), restaurants and accommodation services (1.1% vs 0.9%), and personal care, social protection, and miscellaneous goods and services (3.2% vs 1.2%), while inflation remained unchanged for housing and utilities (2.3%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased by 0.2%, following a 0.9% gain in December.

Tanzania Inflation Rate Softens to 3.4% in November
The annual inflation rate in Tanzania edged down to 3.4% in November 2025 from a near 2-1/2-year high of 3.5% in the previous month. Price-growth moderated mostly for food & non-alcoholic beverages (6.6% vs 7.4% in October); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (3.5% vs 3.6%) and housing & utilities (2.2% vs 2.4%). Meanwhile, prices rose much faster for transportation (2.9% vs 1.7%). On a monthly basis, the CPI rose by 0.3% in November, after a 0.2% decrease in the prior month.
