Senegal Inflation Rate Hits 3-Month High of 1.2%

Senegal’s annual inflation rate accelerated to 1.2% in August 2026 from July’s 14-month low of 0.3%.

It was the highest inflation rate since May, as food and beverages inflation, the largest component of the inflation basket, rebounded to 1.4% after falling 0.4% in July, marking the fastest increase in four months.

Inflation also recovered sharply for transport (1.7% vs -0.1% in July), while accelerating for health (2.0% vs 1.8%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (12.6% vs 11.8%), and financial services (1.1% vs 0.6%).

On the other hand, inflation remained steady for recreation, sports and culture (at 0.8%), education (at 1.0%), and restaurants and hotels (at 2.2%).

By contrast, inflation eased for clothing and footwear (1.1% vs 1.2%) and furnishings (0.6% vs 0.7%), while housing and utilities continued to fall (-0.9% vs -0.8%).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 2.0%, marking the highest level since July 2023, after rising 1% in the prior month.

Senegal’s annual inflation rate eased to 0.3% in July 2026 from 0.4% in June, the lowest since May 2025. The slowdown was mainly driven by a sharper decline in food prices, which fell 0.4% after a 0.2% drop, and housing and utilities, down 0.8% following a 0.6% decrease. Inflation also eased for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (11.8% vs 12%) and furnishings (0.7% vs 0.8%). Meanwhile, inflation remained at 0.8% for recreation, sports and culture, 1% for education, 2.2% for restaurants and hotels, and 0.6% for financial services. In contrast, deflation eased for transports, to 0.1% from 0.6%, while inflation accelerated for health (1.8% vs 1.6%) and clothing and footwear (1.2% vs 1.1%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 1%, marking the highest level since September 2025, after remaining unchanged in the prior month.

Senegal Inflation Rate at 5-Month Low of 0.4%
The annual inflation rate in Senegal slowed to 0.4% in June 2026 from 1.3% in May, marking the softest increase since January. The moderation was driven by a decline in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices, the largest component of the CPI basket, which fell for the first time in five months (-0.2% vs 1.0% in May). Prices also declined for housing and utilities (-0.6% vs 1.9%) and transport (-0.6% vs 0.9%). These declines were partially offset by stronger price increases for alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics (12.0% vs 10.9%), health (1.6% vs 1.3%), recreation and culture (0.8% vs 1.1%), and clothing and footwear (1.1% vs 1.4%). On a monthly basis, the CPI was unchanged after rising 0.2% in the previous month.
