Rwanda Producer Prices Change at 6.00 percent  
Producer prices in Rwanda surged 6.0 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2019, following an upwardly revised 0.2 percent gain in the previous period. It was the highest producer inflation since the third quarter of 2017, as prices remained elevated for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (32.7 percent, the same pace as in Q4) and jumped for water supply (60.4 percent, after being flat in Q4). Meanwhile, cost decreased for mining & quarrying (-6.7 percent vs 8.5 percent) and manufacturing (-3.5 percent vs -4.1 percent). On a quarterly basis, producer prices rose 5.9 percent, after increasing 0.9 percent in the prior period.

Rwanda Interest Rate at 5.00 percent  
The National Bank of Rwanda lowered its benchmark interest rate by 50 bps to a record low of 5% at its May 6th 2019 meeting, to sustain growing domestic demand. Regarding inflation, policymakers noted that it has been low since 2018 and continues to remain low at 1% in 2019Q1; projections put inflation rising to around 3% in 2019 from 1.4% in the previous year. The real GDP grew 8.6% in 2018, driven by agriculture (6%), services (9%) and industry (10%); The good economic performance is expected to continue in 2019, as economy should expand 7.8%. The bank added that exchange depreciation was moderate in 2019Q1, consistent with an initial projection of 5% for the whole year 2019, higher than 4.0% recorded in 2018. Also, the level of foreign exchange reserves remain adequate.

Rwanda GDP Annual Growth Rate at 8.40 percent  
The economy of Rwanda advanced 8.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2019, after a 9.6% expansion in the previous period. The services sector grew 8%, slower than 11% in Q4, namely wholesale and retail trade (7% vs 14%); transport (11% vs 16%); real estate activities (2% vs 7%) and hotels & restaurants (7% vs 11%). In addition, output contracted for information & communication (-2% vs 14%) and public administration (-3% vs 27%). Conversely, the industrial sector advanced faster (18% vs 12%), mainly boosted by mining & quarrying (12% vs -2%) and construction (30% vs 20%); while manufacturing activity lost steam (8% vs 13%). Meantime, agriculture grew 4 percent, the same pace as in the previous period, driven by livestock products (14%, the same pace as in Q4) and food crops (4% vs 3%). On a quarterly basis, the GDP declined 0.5 percent, following a 2.9 percent advance in the last three months to December 2018.
