Consumer prices in Rwanda rose 11.7 percent from a year earlier in May of 2017, following a 12.9 percent rise in April. It was the lowest inflation rate since December 2016, as cost went up at a slower pace for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (20.7 percent vs 23.4 percent in the prior month), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (5.8 percent vs 7.5 percent), transport (3.6 percent vs 4.3 percent), restaurants & hotels (4.3 percent vs 4.9 percent) and miscellaneous gods & services (3.4 percent vs 3.6 percent). Cost increased more for: clothing (8.2 percent vs 7.7 percent) and health (5.2 percent vs 4.7 percent). Inflation was steady for education (23.6 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 1.0 percent, compared to a 0.6 percent rise in April.

Rwanda Producer Prices Change at 11.30 percent  
Producer prices in Rwanda jumped 11.3 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, following a 6.6 percent rise in the previous quarter. It is the highest gain since the series began in the first quarter of 2012, driven by prices of mining and quarrying (47.1 percent from 44.2 percent in Q4) and manufacturing (22.2 percent from 9.2 percent in Q4). In contrast, cost of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply declined significantly (-16.3 percent from a flat reading). On a quarterly basis, factory gate prices rose 3.1 percent compared to a 4.9 percent increase in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Rwanda's economy expanded 2.3 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2016, slowing from a 5.3 percent growth in the previous period and a 10 percent expansion a year earlier. It was the lowest growth since September quarter of 2013 as trade & transport contracted 4 percent (+7 percent in Q3) and industry rose at a slower 1 percent (7.1 percent in Q3) mainly due to a slump in mining & quarrying (-1 percent from +19 percent in Q3) and in construction (-3 percent from 2 percent). In addition, the services sector increased less by 4 percent (7 percent in Q3). By contrast, agriculture, forestry and fishing rose faster by 3 percent (1 percent in Q3). On a quarterly basis, the GDP shrank 1.1 percent. Considering full 2016, economy grew by 5.9 percent compared to 6.9 percent expansion in 2015.
