The Philippines’ 10-year government bond yield climbed to 8.33%, its highest level since May 2010, marking a 31.5 bps gain over the past four weeks.
The advance reflects mounting inflation concerns and expectations of further monetary tightening, after BSP Governor Eli Remolona recently noted that the central bank remains in a tightening cycle, with inflation expected to peak only in the coming months.
Annual headline inflation accelerated to 7.8% in October from 7.2% in September, exceeding expectations of 7.6% and marking the highest reading since February 2023, driven by higher fuel costs, electricity rates, and transport fares.
Elevated global oil prices, peso depreciation, and potential El Niño-related supply disruptions have further heightened inflation risks.
On the fiscal front, the government’s record PHP 19.66 trillion debt stock has raised concerns over debt sustainability, as rising borrowing requirements and debt-servicing costs add to upward pressure on yields.
