Panama Economic Activity Index YoY Change at 3.37 percent  
The economy of Panama advanced 3.37 percent year-on-year in July of 2018, faster than a 1.98 percent rise in the prior month. It was the quickest expansion since April. Considering the January to August period of 2018, the economy advanced 3.09 percent, driven by growth in sectors including transportation, warehousing and communications, utilities, fishing, public administration, commerce and financial services.

The annual inflation rate in Panama decreased to 0.8 percent in September of 2018 from 1.1 percent in the previous month. It was the lowest inflation rate since May, as prices rose less mainly for: transport (1.9 percent vs 4.0 percent in August); recreation & culture (0.1 percent vs 0.2 percent) and housing & utilities (0.7 percent vs 0.8 percent). Meantime, inflation was steady for miscellaneous goods & services (1.0 percent). In addition, cost continued to fall for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-0.2 percent vs -0.3 percent), namely fruits (-3.1 percent) and meat (-1.2 percent); and clothing & footwear (-1.4 percent vs -0.5 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices were flat, following a 0.1 percent increase in the prior month.

Panama’s economy grew 3.1 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2018, following a 4.2 percent expansion in the first quarter. Slower growth was mainly explained by agriculture (+3.6 percent vs +3.8 percent in Q1), mining (-1.2 percent vs +4.9 percent), construction (-1.2 percent vs +4.9 percent), financial services (+3.7 percent vs +4.1 percent), and hotel and restaurant services (-3.3 percent vs -3.1 percent). In contrast, faster growth was observed for commerce (3.9 percent vs 3.8 percent), manufacturing (2.2 percent vs 0.9 percent), utilities (3.6 percent vs 3.1 percent), transport & communications (9.4 percent vs 5.2 percent), and education (3.9 percent vs 0.6 percent).
