Panama’s trade deficit narrowed to PAB 956.7 million in March 2019 from PAB 1022.6 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. Imports fell 6.6 percent year-on-year to PAB 1017.3 million, mainly due to lower purchases of consumption goods (-11.4 percent), namely non-durable (-10.6 percent), semi-durable (-10.8 percent) and fuels & lubricants (-14.7 percent). Also, imports of intermediate goods dropped (-16.3 percent), of which raw materials and intermediate products for industry (-22.8 percent) and construction materials (-34.1 percent). Meanwhile, purchases increased for capital goods (11.3 percent), boosted by transport & communications (55.8 percent) and other capital goods (9.2 percent). Exports decreased 9.1 percent to PAB 60.7 million, as sales went down for bananas (-5.7 percent); fish (-40.5 percent); shrimps (-82.4 percent); and waste steel, copper & aluminium (-9.6 percent).

Consumer prices in Panama fell 0.1 percent year-on-year in April 2019, following a 0.2 percent decline in the previous month. Cost of food & beverages rose further (0.5 percent compared to 0.2 percent), mainly due to vegetables (1.6 percent), meat (1.2 percent) and bread (0.4 percent). Additionally, prices of transport fell less (-0.9 percent compared to -1.1 percent). On the other hand, prices declined at a faster pace for housing & utilities (-0.3 percent compared to -0.2 percent) and continued to fall for clothing & footwear (-1.5 percent, the same as in March); recreation & culture (-0.6 percent); and communications (-0.9 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.3 percent, easing from a 0.4 percent gain in the prior month.

Panama GDP Annual Growth Rate at 4.00 percent  
Panama’s economy advanced 4.0 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2018, following a 3.6 percent expansion in the previous period. Faster growth was mainly driven by financial services (5.6 percent from 3.6 percent in Q3); education (6.1 percent from 4.6 percent); social services & private health (9.4 percent from 5.9 percent); construction (6.5 percent from 2.0 percent); utilities (2.3 percent from 1.2 percent) and mining (6.5 percent from 2.0 percent). On the other hand, output growth slowed in trade (1.8 percent from 5.7 percent); transport & communications (5.7 percent from 9.6 percent); and agriculture (0.4 percent from 2.2 percent). Also, manufacturing production shrank (-0.9 percent from 1.5 percent) and fishing contracted further (-27.4 percent from -11.7 percent). Considering full 2018, the economy grew 3.7 percent easing from a 5.3 percent expansion in 2017.
