Panama Inflation Rate at -0.70 percent  
Consumer prices in Panama dropped 0.7 percent year-on-year in October 2019, compared to -0.6 in the previous month. It was the sharpest fall in consumer prices since at least 2008, as prices declined further for transport (-4.7 percent vs -4.4 percent in September), while Food & beverages prices increased at a slower pace of 0.5 percent (vs 1.0 percent). In contrast, prices declined at a slower pace for communications (-1.2 percent vs -1.6 percent) and recreation & culture (-0.4 percent vs -0.6 percent). Meanwhile, inflation for education remained unchanged at 0.7 percent, while deflation in housing & utilities remained at 0.3 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged down 0.1 percent after remaining unchanged in the previous month.

Panama Economic Activity Index YoY Change at 3.20 percent  
The IMAE economic activity index of Panama advanced 3.20 percent year-on-year in August 2019, slowing from a 3.63 percent expansion in the previous month. Growth was boosted by transport, storage & communications; financial services; public administration; primary activity, construction, utilities, and mining. In contrast, a slowdown in trade was driven by lower activity in the Zona Libre de Colon region. Considering the first eight months of the year, economic activity advanced 3.16 percent, compared to 3.09 percent in the same period of last year.

Panama’s economy advanced 2.9 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2019, easing from a 3.1 percent expansion in the previous period. It was the weakest growth rate since at least 2010, amid a slowdown in construction (2.9 percent from 4.5 percent in Q1); financial services (3.9 percent from 4.7 percent); restaurants & hotels (1.4 percent from 2 percent); and utilities (2.1 percent from 5.6 percent). Additionally, manufacturing activity shrank further (-1 percent from -0.9 percent). On the other hand, output rose at a faster pace in transport & communications (5.2 percent from 4.3 percent); trade (2 percent from 1.9 percent); social services & private health (3.1 percent from 2.7 percent); education (4.5 percent from 0.9 percent); mining (4.7 percent from 4.5 percent); agriculture (8.4 percent from 2.4 percent); and real estate (3.3 percent from 2.8 percent). Also, fishing activities contracted less (-32.5 percent from -39.9 percent).
