The Bank of Namibia raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 bps to 7% during its October 2026 meeting, the highest level since Janaury 2025, following a pause in August.
The decision aims to continue safeguarding the Namibian dollar’s one-to-one peg to the South African rand while limiting the broader inflationary impact of rising fuel costs.
Namibia's inflation has accelerated sharply since early 2026, climbing from 2.1% in March to an over two-year high of 5.4% in September, mainly on account of elevated crude oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict.
Inflation forecasts were revised up to 4.2% in 2026 and 4% in 2027, compared to previous estimates of 4% and 3.9%, respectively, reflecting expectations of a prolonged energy price shock.
The central bank kept its growth outlook unchanged, projecting expansion of 2.1% in 2026 and 2.8% in 2027, although foot-and-mouth disease, weaker global growth and potential El Niño conditions continue to pose risks.
