Namibia Inflation Rate at 5.10 percent  
Inflation rate in Namibia increased to 5.1% in October of 2018 from 4.8% in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since December 2017, mainly due to higher prices of food & non-alcoholic beverages (3% from 2.5% in September), as food (3% from 2.6%), oils & fats (4.5% from 4%), vegetables (7.6% from 5.2%) and non-alcoholic beverages (2.8% from 1.8%). Also, prices rose faster for transport (13.6% from 12.9%); furniture & household equipment (0.9% from 0.3%) and miscellaneous goods & services (4.4% from 3.9%); and cost rebounded for communication (1.1% from -1.2%) and clothing & footwear (0.3% from -3.2%). Meantime, inflation was steady for housing & utilities (3.8%, the same as in September) and education (9.9%), while prices slowed for alcoholic beverages & tobacco (4.9% from 5.6%); recreation & culture (4.8% from 5%); health (4.8% from 5%) and restaurant & hotels (3.5% from 3.6%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.4%, following a 0.8% gain in September.

Bank of Namibia left its benchmark repo rate unchanged at 6.75 percent on its October 24th 2018 meeting, saying that the current monetary policy stance remains appropriate to maintain the one-to-one link between the Namibian dollar and the South African rand and to support domestic economic growth. Policymakers noted that the economy during the first eight months of the year was weak mostly due to a slowdown in agriculture and wholesale and retail trade and expected to remain weak in 2018. The annual inflation rate rose to 4.8 percent in September from 4.4 percent in August, mainly due to higher cost of fuel.

Namibia GDP Annual Growth Rate at -0.20 percent  
The Namibian economy contracted 0.2 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2018, the same as in the previous period. Output shrank for manufacturing (-12.5 percent from 2.1 percent in Q1) and agriculture (-1.1 percent from 1.4 percent) and dropped further for wholesale and retail trade (-5.8 percent from -1.6 percent) and education (-6.2 percent from -4.0 percent). Additionally, growth slowed for real estate (0.2 percent from 0.5 percent) and financial services (0.5 percent from 1.4 percent). Meanwhile, output dropped less for fisheries (-8.0 percent from -13.6 percent); health (-4.9 percent from -6.4 percent) and hotels and restaurants (-2.6 percent from -4.8 percent). Also, growth accelerated for mining and quarrying (22.4 percent from 4.7 percent) and utilities (16.7 percent from 1.9 percent).
