The economy of Macedonia advanced 0.1 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018, slowing from a 1.2 percent growth in the previous quarter. On the expenditure side, a slowdown was seen for household spending (2.3 percent from 2.7 percent in Q4 2017); gross fixed capital formation (-9 percent from -1 percent) fell further and government expenditure (-1.4 percent from -2.1 percent) went down at a softer pace. Also, net external demand contributed positively, as exports rose 10.6 percent (vs 12.1 percent in Q4 2017) and imports rose at a softer 5.1 percent (vs 9 percent in Q4 2017).

Prices advanced faster for transport (8.7 percent from 8 percent); restaurants & hotels (2 percent from 0.9 percent); furniture & household equipment (1 percent from 0.9 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (8 percent from 5.2 percent); communication (0.8 percent from 0.7 percent) and recreation & culture (3 percent from 0.9 percent). On the other hand, prices slowed for food & non-alcoholic beverages (1 percent from 1.4 percent) and prices continued to decline for housing & utilities (-0.2 percent, the same as in April) and clothing & footwear (-0.7 percent from -1.5 percent). Meanwhile, prices rebounded for health (0.3 percent from -0.1 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 1 percent, following a 0.3 percent rise in April.

It was the weakest growth in industrial activity since the beginning of 2018, as output dropped sharply for electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply (-1.9 percent compared to 33.1 percent in March) and fell further for mining & quarrying (-5.5 percent from -5.4 percent).
